Dirty Dozen - Behind the Scenes of their New Album, 20 Dozen

Biography

In 1977, the Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early ... Read more in Amazon's Dirty Dozen Brass Band Store

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band show once again why they are the top of the heap among New Orleans brass bands. Twenty Dozen isn't their best album, but it has everything that makes them such an impressive band. The album isn't quite as full of hard-driving funk as some of their previous albums, but what it lacks in propulsive energy it makes up for with diversity, creativity and a solid groove that never lets your attention stray.

Twenty Dozen has everything from your basic second line sound to soul-jazz to international rhythms. For meat-and-potatoes brass band sounds, you've got several options here, including When The Saints Go Marching In. You may ask yourself, does the world really need yet another recording of this one? Maybe not, but DDBB can still wring some new life out of it, particularly with some excursions into a few other classics as interludes. The band gives you a few other semi-traditional tracks, but as can be expected, they throw in plenty of funk and bop. Other cuts veer towards soul-jazz/funk of the sort that one can imagine Maceo Parker, or even Stanley Turrentine joining in, but the New Orleans sound makes the band unmistakable anyway. The most surprising tracks are the ones that show African and Caribbean influences, some of which sound more like the Gangbe Brass Band that the Dirty Dozen.

An additional comment should be made about the band's current guitarist-- Jake Eckert. This kid can really play. It takes a lot not to be out-classed by these icons of New Orleans, but Eckert can keep up with them. The horn focus of the band means that he mostly plays a supporting role, but when he does step into the forefront, get ready to be impressed. He can play a solo that is convoluted in the best way.

The album conveys a sense of the New Orleans brass band tradition, while adding a guitar and incorporating a number of vocal tunes. It's the sort of thing that belongs in the street rather than the studio, but it's as good an album as it can be.
