This review is from: Twenty Plays of the No Theatre: 20 Plays of the No Theatre (Paperback)
I have been studying the Noh drama in printed English translations, and find the translations in this volume to be quite good. The selection is tasteful, and the format is very accessible. It is surprising to me that there is still so little in the way of Noh performances in the US, and I live in a large metropolitan area where there is a considerable Japanese-American community. Thus, I have to content myself with English translations in books. Some more recent Noh translations also contain elaborate stage directions, something lacking in the Keene volume. Thus, the Keene collection is of value primarily for the literary interest of the plays. Nonetheless I highly recommend it.

What a gift this book is.,
This review is from: Twenty Plays of the No Theatre: 20 Plays of the No Theatre (Paperback)
I have seen a good number of Noh plays. They were fascinating to me precisely because it was so hard to figure out what was transpiring on stage (most Japanese have a hard time understanding the chanted medieval Japanese as well) and the minimal and stylized movements are so different from Western theater traditions.
It wasn't until I read Donald Keene's translations that I understood the universal appeal of the stories which explains the staying power of this ancient form of performance. This book revealed a moving world of human emotions to which I had been blind when I had watched previous Noh performances. Keene's book is a great gift to English speakers interested in Japanese culture.
