The Twenty Seven Club is the third opus to come out the Reed brothers' creative genius in two years. Two of them, the present album and last year's Kompendium project, Beneath the Waves, are masterpieces. The third one, 2011's Chameleon album from Magenta, was not quite as exceptional but it was still one of the best albums of the year. Whereas Chameleon was going for shorter, simpler, independent songs with a more general "poppy" sound, Kompendium had developed around a dark romantic story line and a symphonic, celtic vibe. The Twenty Seven Club goes back to Magenta's core, complex yet easily accessible progressive rock rooted in 70's influences. It also goes back to a concept album, in this case the popular belief in the existence of a "27 club", a group of notable pop and rock musicians who have all died at age 27, usually as a consequence of substance abuse or violence.

It matters little that the famed 27 club exists probably not. It seems that statistics suggest that being a rock musician in your twenties leads to a much riskier lifestyle than that of other twenty-somethings but that there is not a statistically relevant nexus of fate sucking in musical geniuses at 27. Disturbingly, one could wonder if the urban myth might not end up as a self-fulfilling prophecy, since it was reported that Amy Winehouse had dreaded to end up as a member....

Musically, The Twenty Seven Club is an odd beast. The songs are beautiful, approachable and do not bother with radio-friendly structures.

Just became aware of Magenta when they were featured on progstreaming.com (great site, free, full listens to new progrock releases)recently. I loved the album at first listen, was a little hesitant to buy it given the fairly steep cost though. Got my copy today, and am more impressed than ever. The 5.1 Surround mix is awesome, and I haven't even gotten to the DVD yet. This is a little harder (in many spots) than the other two Magenta albums I've purchased (Metamorphosis and Chameleon) but all three are appealing. Magenta shows its roots, sounding particularly like a hard version of Yes at times, but they never sound like that's the goal, it's just what they are. Christina Booth is a magnetic vocal talent, and Chris Fry continually unleashes memorable guitar solos. If you like Frost*, Yes, It Bites, or Pink Floyd, give Magenta a shot. Metamorphosis can be downloaded on Amazon for a bargain $9 or so.

This album is worth checking if you like prog rock or just high quality rock music. Their guitarist is very good and can play in the vein of Steve How or Steve Hackett, if necessary, their main composer Rob Reed does a great job on keyboards and bass guitar. And Christiana's voice is still deep and warm.
It comes with surround sound DVD that enhances your experience. Not the best surround sound mix, to be sure (nobody can beat Steven Wilson or Mike Oldfield in it!), but good anyway. The sounds quality and mix is above average.
I still believe Seven was Magenta's best release, but this one comes close. Go ahead and buy it!
Be sure to check their Web site and their label's LaserCd Web site: the prices there are much lover than on Amazon. Besides, when you buy from the artist directly, you bypass the fat greedy corporate middle man Amazon that rips you with higher price and grab lion share of the price you pay.

Excellent prog-rock and multi-channel mix.
