A hora on the beach,
By
This review is from: Twenty Songs of the Chosen Surfers (Audio CD)
You'd think it's a huge divide - lovers of surf music and those who favor traditional Jewish melodies, but the two can come together here and dance a very exciting hora on the beach. A surprisingly enjoyable musical fusion with excellent guitar playing.

This record is awesome! The Jewish melodies are great with the surf guitar sound - I love it, my kids love it, my Mom loves it, even my Bubbe loves it. Now they all want to go surfing - oy vey!

If you love Jewish Music or surf guitar... you will have a new favorite album. It got my Dad's toes tapping... and I don't think he ever liked either Jewish Music or Surf Guitar... so anyone may like it. It is that good.Enjoy.

Why can't we all just get along?,

Not that there was any great hue and cry for such a thing, but this album answers the musical question, "What would happen if you crossed classic Jewish melodies with surf music?"....(hey, you got choklit in my peanut buttah!...) And somewhat surprisingly, the result ain't half bad...The two genres go surprisingly well together, or perhaps more accurately, Hava Negila, Dreidl, et al. done by a surf band, as surf tunes, are a natural...soon, you forget you've heard them any other way!

NOT AS CRAZY AS IT SOUNDS AT FIRST,

I HAVE A VERY EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF SURF MUSIC, FROM THE OLD, ORIGINAL STUFF, TO A LOT OF NEWER MUSIC, WHICH APPARENTLY BECAME POPULAR AGAIN AS A MUSICAL GENRE FOR SOME REASON AFTER THE MOVIE PULP FICTION. ANYWAY, I DIGRESS. IF YOU LISTEN TO ANY INTERVIEWS WITH DICK DALE, FOR EXAMPLE, HE WILL TELL YOU THAT A LOT OF THE MELODIES FOR THE ORIGINAL SURF MUSIC WERE BORROWED FROM TRADITIONAL MEDITERANNEAN SOUNDING MELODIES AND RHYTHMS, SO IT SHOULD COME AS NO SURPRISE THAT THE TRANSITION OF TRADITIONAL "JEWISH" MUSIC ON THIS CD TRANSLATES WELL INTO SURF SOUNDS. MEL WALDORF(!) IS THE GUY WHO PLAYS ALL THE INSTRUMENTS ON THHIS CD, EXCEPT FOR DRUMS. AND HE PLAYS VERY WELL, IF YO ULIKE SURF MUSIC, IF YOU ARE JEWISH, OR EVEN IF YOU AREN'T A JEWISH SURFER, I THINK YOU WILL LIKE THIS CD.
