3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, December 20, 2004
This is the prequel to "The Miracle Wife," in which we first encounter Nick Colter, Dani Sheraton, and Gem the talking computer. It also reintroduces some characters from "Jinxed." Briefly, Nick comes back from a business trip overseas to find that Dani, his former partner's widow, is pregnant with his child. He railroads her into marrying him, and Dani spends the rest of the book trying to pry declarations of love out of her new husband, whose troubled childhood has made him occasionally appear to have no more emotions than one of his beloved computers (which are actually pretty emotional themselves, in a mechanical sort of way).

This is an okay book if you can handle Nick's amazing arrogance, but it doesn't measure up to "The Miracle Wife."

I read this book years ago and has since then been searching high and low for it. Yes, it was THAT memorable. It made Leclaire one of my top authors, it made me in love again with Robert Redford (it's the blond hero, you see). I love this kind of second-chance love, the tormented hero believing that the heroine did not return his feelings. The heroine had some doubts due to her past experience. And throw in a gem of computer software to shake them all up. A delightful, delightful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suddenly Daddy, April 7, 2009
By
We get to meet Gem, and the fun starts, but not before Nick Colter found out his one-night stand gave him something he had always wanted, a family.
Nick had been in love with Dani Sheraton for five years, he watched as her husband Peter treated her badly and throw away the love Nick wanted so much.
Nick had parents who were so caught up in their own lives they forgot to be there for their son.
Nick showed up at Dani's house to find her about to have his baby.
Nick had to marry her before his child was born, otherwise his child would be in Peter Sheraton's name.
Gem keeps the little family together, even though she is jealous of Dani, because Gem falls for Abigail, and the baby twists the security system around her tiny finger.
Dani keeps telling Nick that Gem has a mind of her own, but it isn't until Gem ignores his order, to unlock the door, Gem will do anything to keep Dani from taking Abigail away. That's when Nick finds Gem won't allow Abigail to be taken from them PERIOD!
What I never got was since Nick had Dani's house were both setup with the Gem security system why didn't Gem tell Nick he was going to be a father? She was there when Abby was conceived, at Nick's house. And she shows Nick Abby sleeping, and when Dani gets in a frustrated when Abby isn't getting milk. Even though Nick asked Gem to alert him if Dani needs him, remember Gem has a mind of her own.
From the back of the book: 'Nick Coulter can't forget the one night he spent with Dani Sheraton. Neither can Dani-their baby's arrival is, well...imminent. But, for nine months, she's kept her pregnancy a secret from him, knowing that Nick's past has left its scars. He doesn't love her, doesn't seem capable of loving anyone. Within twenty-four hours of Nick's return, Dani finds that she's a wife and a mother. Now all she has is a lifetime to teach her new husband about love!'
