When her family calls broken-hearted Georgia Lee Bodine home to Charleston, she knows there's trouble. Her beloved grandmother hired some fancy lawyer to carry out eccentric requests--and unearth an old family secret. More About the Author

I realized I wanted to be a writer at age eight, when I read my first Nancy Drew novel, The Secret of the Old Clock. Most little girl reach the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. I wanted to be the person who created the story!
The dream lay hidden for years while I became a teacher, married, had children...all the usual things. But eventually it re-surfaced, and I began to write, beginning with short children's stories for Sunday school take-home papers. It seemed a long time until that first acceptance, but eventually I began to sell. After some three hundred published short stories, I finally found the courage to work on the novel I'd always wanted to write.
Thirty-some published novels later, I still feel the same excitement every time I begin a new book--a mix of not believing I can do it combined with an overwhelming urge to see the story on the page.
A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and my own Pennsylvania Dutch roots eventually led me to the books I'm writing now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while my forthcoming HQN suspense novels are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I'm also writing a Love Inspired series, The Bodine Family, set on the South Carolina coast where we have a second home.
When I'm not writing, I'm busy with church activities, traveling, and spending time with my three children and six beautiful grandchildren.

This book was a bland read at best. I kept wondering what had prompted me to buy it. I never saw how the initial attraction of the hero/heroine happened. Once the attraction was there between them though, the romance was a little better. The storyline was OK but nothing really outstanding. The reason for Ned's disappearance (revealed toward the end of the book) in my opinion, still was not good enough to put his family through so much turmoil. The storyline with Matt's 7 year old daughter was probably more interesting than the main story. And I thought that Georgia should have at least confronted her fiance.

4.0 out of 5 stars ok, May 1, 2010

The thing that brought these characters together for this story is a woman wanting to name something after her brother~in~law. The reason given for why this would be a problem isn't enough to convince the reader that it would shame the family and make them the town's outcasts like the author intended. When the reason for his disappearance is finally revealed, it, too, is not a believable explanation. It wasn't something that would make a man cut off contact with his entire family. The rest of the book is a pleasant enough read with likeable characters and an ending that, although predictable, isn't rushed like many books are. For the $4 price, it's a good lazy afternoon read.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Book of Three, October 18, 2011
For some reason, Amazon isn't linking this series together...

This book is about a woman named Georgia Lee Bodine who comes home to Charleston after her family sends her a letter, letting her know her grandma is acting a little crazy. Georgia soon meets the lawyer and believes he is going to dupe her grandma and use her. But then she learns he may very well be on the Bodine side.

Matthew Harper is a newly widowed lawyer with an (almost) eight year old daughter. Both father and daughter are grieving deeply for his precious Jennifer who died from cancer. Not even a year has gong by. We don't know exactly how long she's been gone...

Lyndsay is the daughter, and she is grieved deeply on her mother's passing. Worse yet, she can't go to her father with her grief because she's afraid of making him angry...

Then there's Miss Callie Bodine (Georgia's paternal grandmother) who wants to dedicate something in her brother-in-law's name. The only problem is her BIL has been missing since 1942. The family has deemed him a coward and refuse to have him named...

This was a good story line, and full of potential. I must say, however, that the reason for the brother-in-law's leaving was very lame...I could have come up with something better than that!

Also, I loved the fact that Georgia and Matt fell in love, BUTT I feel it was way too soon for them to start a relationship. I felt uncomfortable with them agreeing to a strong commitment in the same moment that he admitted to have grieved for his wife. His grief was too fresh and too new. His wife hadn't been dead for a year yet. Then two months later, they were engaged...I just got a bad feeling about that - It seemed Matt was using Callie as a rebound thing...they should have given this some time to see where it would go...

I enjoyed the story very much. It was a very fast read.
