Nice compliation of out of print titles!,

This review is from: Twice As Nice-Be Music (Audio CD)
I have to admit that the only reason I bought the TWICE AS NICE cd is for the second track "Call Me Mr. Telephone."
The song came out around 1985 by a singer with braids and a mohawk named Cheyne. Rumor had it that Madonna co-wrote and sang backup on it, but that was only an urban legend. This is explained in the liner notes along with the idea that "Into The Groove" was going to be offered to Cheyne as a follow up single, but Madonna decided to keep it and use it herself. Never-the-less, "Call Me Mr Telephone" had a driving infectious beat and hook that stayed with me throughout the years. I had the original 12-inch single but sold it during a drug induced stupor! It has long been out of print and I've been hunting high and low for it. The other songs are mostly underground/obscure hits from the early to mid 80s. The songs have been remastered and sound pretty good, particularly since most of them are over 20 years old. This cd comes with a booklet that tells you a little about the artist and the song that's included in this compliation, as well as the producers of this cd BE MUSIC, DOJO, MARK KAMINS and ARTHUR BAKER PRODUCTIONS. But if you aren't really into that underground sound of the early 80s, this might not be the cd for you. The songs on this cd are a mix of the ecclectic sound of music when it was on the precipice, unsure whether it should fall head first into the sound of the British Invasion/New Wave or still hold on to the high energy dance music (evolution of disco) or both. However, if you remember a song or artist on this comp, these versions are pretty much in their original 12-inch versions. Of course I'm not sure if these are the actual cuts you'll remember, since I only really know the second track and it's in the original 12-inch form. I'll list the song, artist and the running time of each, incase any of them might ring a bell. ****TRACKS*** 01. EXPRESS/52ND STREET/5.02 02. CALL ME MR TELEPHONE/CHEYNE/6.27 03. Hit or miss, but still worth for key "lost" 80s club traxx!,

In hindsight, much of the whole early 80s Hacienda club culture might seem a bit overrated, but this nice useful CD compilation of hard-to-find Factory club traxx hits the spot - while hit or miss, you'll find some really rare cuts here worth seeking out that will take you back, like CHEYNE's Madonna-meets-Danceteria pastiche "CALL ME MR TELEPHONE" (rumor has it Madge was due to give Cheyne "Into the Groove" as a follow-up single, but wisely changed her mind!), QUANDO QUANGO's best song "GENIUS" in the Mark Kamins-style "PART 2" club mix, and several early raw tracks from UK soulsters 52ND STREET that are, surprisingly, much more experimental than their later Nick Martinelli-meets-Loose-Ends croosover style. All in all, if you bought most of these 12"s back in the day when they were first released, this is a nice round-up for Arthur Baker, Jellybean-esque productions. Check out the other volume, COOL AS ICE, too!
