My Favorite Katrina Book So Far,
By Poppy Z. Brite (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twice A Survivor: A Katrina Journal (Paperback)
Full disclosure: Dr. Klimitas was my vet for years, and I don't trust just anyone with my animals, so I was predisposed to like this book. Having said that, TWICE A SURVIVOR is still a rippingly good read, rich in New Orleans character, humor, and sheer resilience. Amid the all the arguing and pontificating about the failure of the federal levees and its aftermath, it's edifying to find a strong voice detailing the experiences of a man who lived on the second floor of his flooded Lakeview house, rationing his food, suffering from the intense heat, using a cooler for necessary bodily functions, and attempting to keep his restless mind occupied in a place of increasing madness. I miss Dr. K as a vet, but it's good to know he has this previously undisclosed talent for writing and I hope TWICE A SURVIVOR won't be his only book.
