This review is from: Twilight Crossings (Paperback)
Speculative fiction, for years, has stood apart for various reason. This set of four novellas ie yet another reason why. ISADORA, TWIN STAR, EIDOLON, and THEIF OF DREAMS are all truly independant voices. Vivid imagery and world building take you to each world, and capitvate you for a short time.Well done ladies.

Fantasy lives on...,
By
This review is from: Twilight Crossings (Paperback)
This is a combination of Sci-Fi and Fantasy type of novel. It contains four separate stories.
In ISADORA by Jeanne Allen, a young woman is accused of witchcraft and sentenced to burn all because she falls in love with a strange traveler. I cannot reveal where the traveler is from though. That is vital to the story. I would prefer you, as the reader, to find out on your own. In TWIN STAR by Jeanine Berry, a young woman of the Dorshan race is a "true dreamer". The ruler seeks a bride and orders several single women locked in his harem so he may sample them and choose. These two may change their entire world. In EIDOLON by Shannah Biondine, a young lady (sort of) has a wager with her brother. I REFUSE to tell anything about her brother though. Part of the story's surprise is finding out. Anyhow, the brother maintains that humans are selfish, lazy, and greedy. She is to secure a pact with a mortal who must prove himself better than his peers. Both demonic and heavenly hosts await the outcome. In THIEF OF DREAMS by Sheri L. McGathy, the daughter of a lord is wooed by two men. One wants her for herself. The other wants her because the joining of their houses would be considered a great alliance. They have one year to win her heart. This story involves a Faery Ring. Telling anything more would ruin the tale. **** Fantastic stories from awesome authors that you will want to read over and over. I enjoyed every moment of the book. These stories do not target a certain audience. Great for male or female. Recommended! **** Reviewed by Detra Fitch for Huntress Reviews.

Magical Stories,
By
This review is from: Twilight Crossings (Paperback)
Skillful writing and magical themes highlight this fine collection of impressive stories. 'Isadora' delivers a different slant on the Salem Witch Trials theme. 'Twin Star' comprises a fascinating alien romance story. 'Eidolon' explores a different type of brother and sister. 'Thief of Dreams' is a tale filled with fairies and fairy rings and forest creatures and lovers betrayed. This anthology is well worth the price.

Fiction Factor review,
By Tina Morgan (Dayton, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twilight Crossings (Paperback)
The combined effort of Jeanne Allen, Jeanine Berry, Shannah Biondine, and Sheri L. McGathy, Twilight Crossings is a delightful journey into new worlds and new loves. The stories are well written and kept me reading from my computer screen far longer than I normally would.
The authors do an excellent job of building their fantasy worlds in less than 30,000 words. The characters are well developed and strong. I found myself entranced by the conflicts and cheering for the protagonists to overcome the obstacles they faced. Isadora tells the story of one young woman's thirst for knowledge and her desire to rebel against her authoritarian world. Witnessing a witch burning at a very young age, Isa knows the risk of being "different" in her post-apocalyptic society. When a stranger comes to town she finds a soul mate who shares her desire for knowledge, but who dares not reveal his true nature. How will the elders respond if she follows her heart? Will she pay with her life? Beyond Earth's boundaries and into a realm of mixed races from distant worlds lies the setting for Twin Star. Along with several other women, Sonneret, a former slave, is brought before Ehereon, the ruler of Arth so that he might chose a new Lifemate. She hopes he will find her alien features too repulsive and send her home but her wishes are denied and she is entangled in court intrigue. She discovers the only way to save her people from annihilation is to win the heart of Ehereon. Few fantasy stories are able to travel back in time to the old west as well as Eidolon. Stepping away from the standard female protagonist, Biondine tells the story of Haggerty, a club-footed young man "smitten" by the new "costumer" in town. But Azubah is playing a game with ancient beginnings and high stakes. (As a dedicated Louis L'Amour fan, I was impressed by this story's western theme. It was strong and the characters were believable.) Theif of Dreams takes the reader back to medieval earth with a story of passion and jealousy. Nerys has been promised to Gerard Regan but her heart belongs to Cody O'Neal, son of a lesser noble. However, Lord Devi is a loving father and he grants Nerys a year to decide which man she will marry. Thwarted in his plans to expand his lands and own the Lady Nerys, Gerard plots a terrible vengeance on Cody. Nerys must find the courage to risk all to save her beloved not only from Gerard but the faery folk as well. Twilight Crossings is a delightful anthology filled with believable characters and interesting challenges

This review is from: Twilight Crossings (Paperback)
"Each of the four stories in TWILIGHT CROSSINGS pushes the bounds of speculative fiction in its own way, from an exploration of the price of foreknowledge, to giving the devil his due. This collection will satisfy any lover of thoughtful, provocative speculative fiction."------- "In ISADORA, Jeanne Allen spins a thought-provoking tale that explores the consequences of choice, both in our individual lives and in the universe as a whole." "TWIN STAR by Jeanine Berry is a fascinating story with superb world-building. An exploration of love and fate, it will hold your attention and not let go until the last word." "EIDOLON by Shannah Biondine is one of those rare stories that stays in your thoughts long after you have set the book aside. In a dusty mining town, a bet is carried out between Satan and his sister, using the townsfolk as pawns but not all the players are as they seem." "In THIEF OF DREAMS, Sheri L. McGathy breathes new life into the old story of mortals abducted by fairies. Beautifully written, this tale of love and hope in the face of overwhelming odds casts a spell of its own over the reader." "Elaine Corvidae, award-winning author of WINTER'S ORPHANS." |
