Watching magician Damien Namtar perform, private investigator Shannon Mallory wonders if he could have killed her best friend Tawny. He certainly seems like a suspect since Tawny was his audience volunteer the night of her death. Not only that, but the way Tawny was killed was bizarre--only two small puncture wounds in her neck and her body drained of blood. Dying from a mysterious blood disorder, Shannon knows she doesn't have much time to avenge Tawny's death. Shannon confronts Damien with her questions and he feels obligated to protect her from Tawny's killer, suspecting she may be next. Maggie lives with her soulmate Lance in a tiny town called Taylor (phone exchange: Truxton, mailing address: Cincinnatus, tax map: Cuyler. Smalltown folks understand!) in New York State's little known but sprawling and gorgeous dairy farm & wine country near the Fingerlakes region. Together they have a pair of Old English Mastiffs (Dozer & Daisy,) a chubby little bulldog (Niblet), an arrogant cat (Glorificus,) a saltwater reef aquarium with two clown fish (Larry & Cill) and two damsels (Vinnie & Blue,) a bearded dragon (Captain Yellow Beard) and a life of utter contentment and joy.

While I still believe the second in the series "Twilight Memories" is my favorite, this book stands up well with the rest of the Wings of the Night series. The explanations of the legends of Gilgamesh <sp?> was fascinating and returning the characters from the previous books was inspired as well. The hero is outstanding. The heroine isn't my favorite but the rest of the book makes up for any fault to be found in her.
