This review is from: Twilight in the Kingdom: Understanding the Saudis (Praeger Security International) (Hardcover)
The author claims this book is about "what the US goverment was learning about Saudi Arabiain the critical periods preceding and following September 11, 2001." It relates the author's unclassified dispatches regarding the Hijaz (Western Saudi Arabia)as a member of the diplomatic corps stationed in Jeddah. While the dispatches contain some interesting information (like a Pilgrimage to Mecca from an insider's point of view), they certainly wouldn't be what I was looking for to help me understand the socio-politico-economic situation in a country that had just provided the majority of attackers against me. And it certainly did not do much to help me increase my understanding of the Saudis as stated in the book's subtitle. I believe you can find much better information elsewhere.
