A throw-back to the old D&D cartoon, June 21, 2007
This review is from: The Twilight Realm (Paperback)
5 teenagers are transported from Earth to Xhanderre, a medieval world where sorcery rules. Each of them are given special powers courtesy of an item given to them, turning them into warriors, thieves and sorcerers in their own right. The five of them set off on a quest to seek the destruction of the evil sorcerer Avron Kromar, who has turned a lush world into a shadowy realm of eternal gloom and nightmare.
Sound familiar? Well, if you're a fan of the old D&D cartoon, like I was, then it should be. I'm not sure, though, whether the book or the cartoon came first.
I read the book 2 decades ago and instantly loved it. After buying a 2nd hand copy through Amazon, I'm happy to say that I still love the book, despite my anticipation of the betrayal at the end (although what the betrayal is, I'll leave you to wonder).
What I had forgotten was how deeply the author got into the characters of each of the teens, delving deep into their fears and weaknesses. In some respects, the tale deals as much with magic as it does with 5 people coming to understand themselves. For this I applaud the author.
My only point of contention about the book is why the 4 other teens never got angry with the one girl who kept flying away at the first sign of trouble. I mean, I understand the psychology of it, but I find it nigh impossible to believe that the others wouldn't be in the least bit miffed at her constantly running away.
Ah, well, despite the above point, I highly recommend the book to anyone remotely interested in D&D.

Surprisingly deep D&D homage., July 21, 2006
This review is from: The Twilight Realm (Paperback)
The characterizations in THE TWILIGHT REALM are more complex than one normally gets (with the possible exception of Teresa). Rather than a united group, our five heroes spend much of their time bickering and arguing with one another; tensions run high for much of the adventure. Even the villains and supporting characters feel fleshed out. The battles were mainly well-done, especially the last few in the concluding chapters. My only complaint would be that the final battle wasn't quite long enough, and Teresa's character could get a bit tiresome.
