Book Description

December 29, 2008 Twilight Reign 3
Scree has been wiped from the face of the Land in a brutal demonstration of intent. While those responsible scatter to work on the next step in their plan, the stakes are raised - all the way to the heavens - as the Gods themselves enter the fray. Returning home to a nation divided by fanaticism, Lord Isak is haunted both by the consequences of his actions in Scree and by visions of his own impending death. As the full extent of Azaer's schemes become clearer, he realises prophecy and zealotry must play their part in his battle-plans if there is to be any chance of surviving the coming years. As a white-eye, Isak has had to embrace the darker parts of his own soul, but now the savage religious fervour sweeping his nation must also be accepted and turned to purpose, in the name of survival. With the battle lines vague and allegiances uncertain, the time for heartless decisions and ruthless action has come. Two figures oppose Isak and his allies: the greatest warrior in history, who dreams of empire and Godhood, and a newborn baby whose dreams have no limit.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Twilight Reign series has demonstrated a depth of involvement and a sense of epic scale that has strained against the confines of each volume. It's obvious Lloyd has a vision of exactly where his power-hungry gods and kings are going, and its proving to be an extraordinary journey." -- SFX Sandy Auden "Every character plays a part, and with each new chapter comes a new thread, a new twist and a renewed sense of uncertainty. Lloyd's writing is both poetic and colourful, making Isak's tormented dreams a graphic reality and causing the beautifully artistic landscape to develop a character of its own. The outcome will nevertheless take your breath away and leave you gasping for the follow-up." -- Alice Wybrew DREAMWATCH TOTAL SCI FI "Lloyd's world owes more to Michael Moorcock than Tolkien, though the braided plot structures of his book are standard modern fantasy. Dark and brooding nonetheless." DEATHRAY --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Tom Lloyd was born in 1979 in Berkshire. After a degree in International Relations he went straight into publishing where he still works. He never received the memo about suitable jobs for writers and consequently has never been a kitchen-hand, hospital porter, pigeon hunter, or secret agent. He lives in Oxford, isn't one of those authors who gives a damn about the history of the font used in his books and only believes in forms of exercise that allow him to hit something. 5.0 out of 5 stars The best book in The Twilight Reign series so far., May 11, 2009
This review is from: Twilight Reign (Twilight Reign 3) (Hardcover)
WOW!! I thought the previous two novels in this series were great but this novel speaks volumes for the writing skills of the author. Lloyed has really come along with The Grave Thief, his characters are better written the landscapes of this novel are more defined, the story as a whole is far more well rounded and put together better than the previous two. After reading this book i'm really looking forward to the fourth book in this series, alas we're going to have to wait until summer of 2010 before fans can read the next instalment, The Ragged Man.

This novel is set after the events of Scree and Isak has to use all his strength and guile to hold to his power as the Lord of the Farand. There are forces at play that know one can fully understand and the Gods themselves have personally taken an involved in the world of men. Among the priests there is talk of holy wars and fanaticism is spreading throughout the cults. All of this and the threat from Menin Lord who spreads war and death through out the land, no matter what Isak and his friends must survive or Farlan and the world as they know it may well be doomed.

If you have enjoyed the previous two book in this series you're in for a treat with The Grave Thief or if you're looking for a new Fantasy series to start then this is for you. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worst in the series so far!, April 21, 2010
2.5 stars but I'll bump it up to 3 because I do love Isak.

This book has been the bane of my existence for the last month. Great idea, poor execution. There are many characters that really shine in this book, in this whole series: Isak Stormcaller, Kastan Styrax, Mihn ab Netren ab Felith, Zhia Vukotic, Doranei... Unfortunately, instead of focusing on them, Lloyd floods the book with scores of characters that are completely unimportant to the overall story. I want the main characters to witness important events, not some merchant's wife or a major that we never hear of again! Every other chapter introduces yet more characters that are used for one event only, but Lloyd still feels the need to give them rich background which leads to a deluge of information that's just not important! I want to know more about Isak or Legana, I want them to be out there, doing stuff.

And then there are the Gods... I'm not a religious or spiritual person, so I don't care about some false Prophet preaching to the Harlequins about some kid they should follow. I get it, tell me once, dear author, do not drag this plot out infinitely! I don't need to see the Prophet convince every one of them. I don't need to see the shadow aka Azaer aka Ruhen and his disciples do stuff in detail. Fine, they're bad. They have a plan. But they are simply boring, sorry to say! And giving them cruel stuff to do doesn't make up for how boring they are. Kastan Styrax? That one is great. Azaer? Not so much.

The most exciting parts? Isak doing his thing, fighting with daemons, using his power! That's awesome. I want to read more about that! Why do I have to trudge through heaps and oceans of unimportant, slow stuff to get to it?

Another great book in the amazingly gritty world that LLoyd created. Only problem is waiting for the international shipping.
