I couldn't believe what I found in the pages of this collection of SC letters from the Heyward family. This book gives a literary voice to our rich southern history. To have shared such personal letters, so that history can be examined by not only academics, but also by those with southern historical interests, impresses the reader with a family's passion for the truth. To have been edited by someone with such high praise and esteem as the noted Dr. Allen H. Stokes (recipient of the Governor's Archives Award of the South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board, the Alexander S. Salley Award of the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies, and the State of South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto), Director of the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, illustrates the poignancy of such rich family history in the Heyward family. The book provides insight into the drama and turmoil experienced, not only by the Heywards but also by others during this difficult period of our American History. Obviously, great care was taken while compiling and organizing such personal and intriguing anecdotes, vignettes, and traumatic experiences, which the Heyward family endured. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in gaining immense insight into a significant turning point and poignant period of South Carolina history. Twilight on the South Carolina Rice Fields is not only a superb collection, but also required reading for anyone with an interest in the definitive account of the rice kingdom's final stand. Our country is fortunate to have families like the Heyward's and editors like Hollis (herself a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina) and Dr. Stokes, who are willing to share such stories, so that future generations of South Carolinians and Americans will know the truth and become further enlightened about our history.
