5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Prose
The writing in this book is absolutely exquisite--it was almost like poetry. The images produced were so clear that it was almost like watching a video--I felt the cold in Minnesota, and the oppressive humidity of Louisiana. The characters were so very real that I actually empathized with them. The story was disturbing, compelling, and sensuous.

I must say that I'm shocked that this book has gotten such good reviews so far. I must say that I'm shocked that this book has gotten such good reviews so far. The formatting was horrible, the book is in DESPERATE need of some decent editing (for example, the book is irritatingly riddled with simple misspellings like "hosue" instead of house as well as grammatical errors like "would of" instead of would have), and the story itself lacked direction and explanation. It doesn't make sense to me why the two main characters are out to get each other when they've only met once before (and very briefly, at that) in their lives. Additionally, why would Clive's family take in this woman that they don't even know and treat her better than their own kin? Very unrealistic. Too much of the story goes unexplained and the ending was very rushed and explained nothing.

This book seems like something that was quickly created, not well thought-out, not edited, and never revised to explain things that don't make sense. I did not find it to be gripping, a page-turner, or a book that has you on the edge of your seat. I would never recommend this book to a friend and am frankly a bit shocked that the author has the gall to charge money for this unfinished piece of work. Definitely not worth the 99 cents, please save your money.

I would like to see the formatting improved, but the disconnect wasn't bad enough to make me put the book down.

...with a twist of goth and one seriously bad serial killer!

This book really held my interest all the way through, but then the ending came and went in a flash. With so much build up, I would have thought the ending would take longer to complete itself - not so.

The detail given to describe the setting of each scene was incredible. Also, you were provided deep insight into the characters, even the lesser ones. There was nothing vague about this book.

Formatting was off, but it wasn't too distracting after a while.

A book that makes you think while you're reading it and even more after. So very well written, this book held my interest until the last page.

This is a compelling book by an author that I would definitely buy from again. His characters are troubled and bizarre, but you begin to understand them finally and really feel for them and their various situations.

The formatting was a bit off, but nothing that made the book unreadable.

This is not the typical police story. There is no page per minute action with fast-paced plot twists. Rather this is an introspective poetic examination of an ex-alcoholic, ex-police woman, Andrea. How easy would it be to like someone like her, with her lack of judgement, and self-mutilation habits? Can someone this bizarre be appealing? Yet, by the end of the story... you will be on her side. Andrea is now on a mission, selected by a secret police force, to rid the world of a serial killer, Clive, who had picked her up at a bar and had tried to kill her, only to later escape from maximum security prison. She goes to Louisiana, posing as the killer's fiancee, and meets his modern day Adams family. There, she waits, expecting him to turn up, so she can kill him. We can even grow to understand these folks. Good, evil and shades in between are mixed with the flavors of the South as Andrea lives with them and discovers their secrets. Abrupt moments of extreme violence are balanced by Andrea's increasing attachment to the young girl in the family, also a victim of child abuse like herself. I read this in a measured way, intrigued by the psychological drama and the sense of place. The action-packed ending was not unexpected, and was a shocking contrast to the prior dreamy explorations. Overall a solid good read, but the Kindle formatting looked as if it were done by chimps randomly hitting the return key :). Hope it is fixed soon. Would read the next book by the author.

This was an excellent, fast paced story that I didn't want to put down.

There is a small issue with formatting that I almost deducted a star for, but I just couldn't do it as it did not hinder my reading much at all. It's only a matter of sentences dropping to a new line in the middle and not having page breaks between chapters. Annoying, but not debilitating.

The characters here are vivid and believable. The writing is succinct and graphic.

This was a steal for $.99. I will definitely be watching out for more from this author.

If poor formatting is an issue for you, don't get this book. Very distracting. Here's a sample:

/////////////

Usually they are accompanied only by silence. But

sometimes, depending on who they are escorting, there

is idle chatter or strange babbling, like a preacher

speaking in tongues. At times there is cursing. Rarely,

but it does happen, there is scuffling and screaming.

When the two pairs stop outside my door I listen to

the

locks being released and mark off another week.

Another

week away from you and those I love and must

protect.

At Super Max, inmates are confined to their cells

and on like this throughout. Besides being ugly, how

is the reader supposed to know when a new paragraph

has started?

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic Writing., February 17, 2010

I accidentally purchased this book, and frowned when I discovered I got a genre I normally do not read. I thought "Yay me.....ex-cop chases down nemesis killer, kills him.. so much fun. But since I paid for it, I figured I would give it a try maybe it won't be so bad.

What I found beside horrible kindle formatting was a book that drew you in with amazing details and descriptions, characters you grew understand and sympathize with, yes even the bad guys made you empathize with them. What intrigued me the most was that the heroine, Andrea, was almost bad enough to be the bad guy with her tormented past. I had never read a book that made me wonder if the good guy was going to go to the "dark side" but this one did. It left me guessing on the reasoning behind why Andrea was there.. to kill Clive or to join him. The small town of Twilight came alive inside my head the town people, back water Louisiana types took on a life of their own in the story.

The book is ultimately about broken people, what leads them to be what they are and the choices they make to lead them into the future. It does contain graphic material on incest and child abuse, if you can't handle those subjects do not read this book as they are an intricate part of the story line.

The story line was a slow dreamy pace that built up into a huge climatic ending that left you kind of sad but sated with how it ended. Thumbs up for this book from a person who usually runs the other direction from this type of story.

Completely depressing novel filled with incest and alcoholism. No redeeming qualities to mention, once i started reading it i kept on, hoping it would get better. In the end I felt like I needed a shower

its not often a book holds my intrest like this one, i started to speed read it like i usually do with my kindle and after about 14% i realized this book had some real quality to it so i started over and let the words fill me. the characters are very interesting and complex, with good guys being bad and bad guys being good, but its not a liberal love affair with criminals, its just about broken people.
