While living in Japan I asked my Japanese friends for recommendations about contemporary Japanese writers. The books had to be translated in English of course which created some confusion about the titles. The original title is often lost in translation. The setting gives you an idea about life in Tokyo but the theme is universal. How one's life becomes totally disrupted while taking care of an Alzheimer patient in this case the father in law of working woman. Sawako Ariyoshi has written more books but this one stands out: highly recommended.

I appreciated this book even more when my own parent began a descent into senility. It was good to see into someone else's everyday life in that situation, and to know I was not alone.
