Book Description

9 and up4 and up
Pure nuttiness: the Twimerick, a fiendish confection of limerick plus
tongue-twister, topped off by the deliciously whacky illustrations
of its inventor, Lou Brooks. To wit (and to be read out loud quickly):

A petulant flatulent
platypus starts,

To tooting and flouting his
flute to his farts,
But at platypus outings,
His flatulent floutings,
Flout his flute flat at the
tootiest parts.

Nonsensical whimsy—or whimsical nonsense—Twimericks are a form of wordplay that are irresistible for kids, as well as for grown-ups unafraid to be silly; perfect to be read at parties or in a classroom when learning poetry (that’s right, who knew poetry could be so much fun?). And the book itself, like the best poetry collections, is a gem offering one Twimerick per page, each illustrated in full-color by the author, a legendary commercial artist. Open to any page and feel the unbridled creative energy spilling out. It's pure happiness.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–4—In this slim collection of lighthearted verse, Brooks fuses limericks and tongue twisters to create 30 "twimericks," including "Which Witch Was Which?": "Two witchy witches in a Wichita ditch,/One witch with a twitch caused the witches to switch,/The spell they were under,/Caused people to wonder,/Which Wichita witch switched was which?" The results are broadly humorous and frequently gross, as in "A Flatulent Platypus" and "Frankly, Frank Fankley," which centers on a snot-filled hanky. The manic, exaggerated cartoons perfectly complement the silly goings-on. This is a far cry from Edward Lear, but it should prove popular with fledgling readers who are discovering nonsense wordplay for the first time.—Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars A little twisted, but in a good way., October 18, 2009

This book proves that Lou can do things I didn't know he could do, and it's true he can do them well too! A book by Brooks that looks like a million bucks. Having just read a few Twimericks out loud, I can't help but write like that.

I have to admit, I love everything that Lou Brooks does. Lou's illustrations are always wonderful and this book is an extra treat because he has developed an art style I haven't seen him use before. Created just for this book? Impressive!

But the big surprise is that Mr. Brooks has created a whole new poetic form, a combination of limerick and tongue twister, that is delightful to read out loud and at the same time almost impossible. Equal parts art book and poetry book, while being a 100% fun novelty book, Twimericks is the latest craze in the making. It makes me wish I were 10 years old and sharing tongue-twisting limericks with my fifth grade class, though it's great for winning bar bets, too.

Recommended for anyone with a tongue.

4.0 out of 5 stars party fun, March 4, 2010

I used this book for a party game and it was a big hit. I just passed it around and everyone chose a page and read it aloud. I gave each one a chocolate kiss for trying. It was an easy game and everyone enjoyed themselves.

I saw this book and had to get it. I was already a fan of Lou's illustration work and was pleasantly surprised to see he had a book out (his first!); when I saw the snappy illustrations and read a few of the 'twimericks' I knew my boy would really like this book (he's seven and really appreciates wordplay and cartooning). The twimericks are just that clever and catchy that it's really fun to read them out loud, especially with a kid. The drawings are very fresh. Lou's developed a wacky new style that delight the eye; colorful, wildly exaggerated characters and pop art energy infuse the drawings and go perfectly with the tongue twisters.
