Editorial Reviews

This West Coast jazz pianist has played with Dylan, Santana and a "who's who" of jazz stars. Here, he pays homage to Bill Evans, not only picking his favorite Evans tunes but using overdubs to record piano twice (as on Evans' Conversations with Myself ); check out Nardis; Very Early; Funkallero; Grace; Interplay; Walkin' Up; Gloria's Step , and more!

Alan Pasqua's obsession with Bill Evans and to a lesser extent, baseball inspired this collection of tunes which for the most part was either written by or associated with Bill Evans. I have often thought that Bill's influence on Alan was pretty strong, but here you can really hear how much he has absorbed and metabolized the Evans concept. It's not just the impressionistic voicings and the gorgeous touch-; it's also in the melodic construction and phrasing. Pasqua has a relaxed, bell like tone and like Evans, he likes to play across the bar, stretching his phrasing out to create ribbons of beauty. Given the overdubbed piano format, it is hard not to compare this recording with Evans' own Conversations With Myself and Further Conversations. All in all, Mr Pasqua acquits himself quite well when placed next to those monumental recordings.

There is a sort of retro quality to these piano recordings. They are a home recording and as such are darker sounding than most piano recordings in the digital age, possessing somewhat attenuated highs and an almost analog roundness in the mids. in a way, it reminds me of the Evans recordings. Pianos are recorded in stereo, but each is panned left and right, with a slight stereo overlap. I believe the pianos on Evans recordings were recorded in mono.

The tunes are as I mentioned, are a mix of Evans originals, including lovely renditions of Very Early, Time Remembered, and a very intricate take on Turn out the Stars etc, with a scattering of jazz standards like Lafaro's Gloria Step and Miles Davis' Nardis. Rounding out the proceedings are Grace, a sweet Pasqua original and even an Evans inflected take on Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Alan Pasqua - TWIN BILL Twin Bill: Two Piano Music of Bill Evans, (BFM Jazz,2011) Alan Pasqua - Pianos

For the most part the music of Bill Evans and songs we associate with Bill Evans for 2 pianos is given a telling on this album.

It's hard to say sometimes where inspiration comes from. The art of listening and that of playing are of the same cloth and are both, indeed an art. Anthony Braxton once said that some of the most musical people he has met weren't musicians. This gives hope to those of us who love music yet don't play an instrument or sing worth a hoot.

Here on TWIN BILL it is refreshing to hear an artist that is also a good listener. That's not always a given. Alan Pasqua gives the listener his view of the music of Bill Evans ( a lot of B E's compositions here too btw) and divulges his love for the man and his art with 11 songs, and liner notes worth reading. Nice job Alan.

When I watch a baseball game and I know something about the player and know this player has a love and respect for the game it makes a difference in my appreciation for that player. Something about watching someone who has an inherent love for their craft. Same can be said for Alan Pasqua. He too is a baseball fan, I bet if he were to read this he would know something of what I mean when I say that. I'll hear Bill Evans music, music I have loved since first hearing it on KIND OF BLUE, with new ears after this.

I have heard Alan Pasqua's Fusion ( the "F" word is there ever was one, but the one that gets the point across in an open forum like this) in the past and enjoyed that. This is the other side of the coin or the mirror, however you want to see it. Without Jazz like this, there would I believe be no call for anything of the likes of Fusion.
