Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2010 release from the Baltimore Alt-Rockers. Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter's redolent, charred voice are the core components of Lower Dens. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost-heavy weird-fi, now writes and plays with a group that might get filed under New Wave, or Drone Pop, or Post-Punk. With due deference to her solo work, we're very glad.

Just beware, if you get this album, you'll play it on repeat in your car, but that won't be good enough. Then you'll start looking the band up on YouTube; then you'll start repeating songs in the car, and setting up your own play list. Then, you'll have to get it on Vinyl (the way God intended it to be) for your house. Thank God for Kenwood and Advent. Next, the neighbors will start wondering why the walls vibrate. The only thing good to listen to afterwards will be either Grinderman or VU's Sister Ray (It's so pretty. Really. And soothing). On Vinyl, like God intended. (Anyone got a copy of Machine Metal Music they'd like to part with?) Or, the Flying Burrito Brothers Hot Burrito #2, with Sneaky Pete on pedal steel with the fuzz pedal. Or, the long version of Calvary Cross by Richard Thompson. Also on Vinyl, because it is good.

Great album! Haunting vocals, distorted guitar, and hooks that have buried the songs deep in the reptilian portion of my brain.

"I Get Nervous" and "Hospice Gates" are my favorite tracks, but "Holy Water" is a rocking instrumental.

Why aren't you listening to this right now? Buy it!

This album is a classic. Beautiful, mellifluous vocals, hyperintelligent and self-aware lyrics (with subtle, dry humor throughout) and a beautiful haze of laid-back (yet still somehow propulsive and danceable) instrumentation, all under a haze of noir-ish/ Ennio-Morricone Western-themed atmosphere. Totally one of a kind, must-have album for me, that exact perfect intersection between experimentalism and pop music. Check out their other two albums (Nootropics and Escape From Evil) as well. They are one of the most brilliant bands of all time.

jana hunter's voice is on a whole new level from any other vocalist in the same genre as lower dens. this album is influential to say the least. if you appreciate great layered tracks, then twin hand movement is like gold. the track "tea lights" is gonna make you feel like you're about to have some out of body experience (in a good way, of course).
