Editorial Reviews

2010 release from the Baltimore Alt-Rockers. Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, insistent drum throbs and Jana Hunter's redolent, charred voice are the core components of Lower Dens. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost-heavy weird-fi, now writes and plays with a group that might get filed under New Wave, or Drone Pop, or Post-Punk. With due deference to her solo work, we're very glad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damned thing's addictive November 23, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Just beware, if you get this album, you'll play it on repeat in your car, but that won't be good enough. Then you'll start looking the band up on YouTube; then you'll start repeating songs in the car, and setting up your own play list. Then, you'll have to get it on Vinyl (the way God intended it to be) for your house. Thank God for Kenwood and Advent. Next, the neighbors will start wondering why the walls vibrate. The only thing good to listen to afterwards will be either Grinderman or VU's Sister Ray (It's so pretty. Really. And soothing). On Vinyl, like God intended. (Anyone got a copy of Machine Metal Music they'd like to part with?) Or, the Flying Burrito Brothers Hot Burrito #2, with Sneaky Pete on pedal steel with the fuzz pedal. Or, the long version of Calvary Cross by Richard Thompson. Also on Vinyl, because it is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the year, so far September 27, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Great album! Haunting vocals, distorted guitar, and hooks that have buried the songs deep in the reptilian portion of my brain.

"I Get Nervous" and "Hospice Gates" are my favorite tracks, but "Holy Water" is a rocking instrumental.

Why aren't you listening to this right now? Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my favorite records July 30, 2013

jana hunter's voice is on a whole new level from any other vocalist in the same genre as lower dens. this album is influential to say the least. if you appreciate great layered tracks, then twin hand movement is like gold. the track "tea lights" is gonna make you feel like you're about to have some out of body experience (in a good way, of course).
