Book Description

March 1, 2010 1 and up
Star of the Week! Every bright star in Ms. Sun's class could hardly wait to be a superstar. Twinkle knew what she would share when it was her turn-her very favorite song! But first, Blaze shared his asteroid cookies, Beamer brought his pet comet, and Shimmer led the class in Constellation Tag. Then Blink sang... oh, no! the very song Twinkle thought only she knew! Can Twinkle find something else to share? Maybe if she wishes and wishes... Joan Holub's starry story is perfectly matched with Paul Nicholls's sparkling illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When Ms. Sun, a teacher at Sky School, announces that each student will have a turn being “Star of the Week,” Twinkle plans to sing her favorite song. Each week brings something different, from Blaze’s “Asteroid cookies” to Beamer’s pet comet to Luster’s favorite book. Then Blink sings “Twinkle, Twinkle,” which upsets Twinkle and sends her searching for something else, besides the song, to share with the class. An unexpected event, though, provides both a happy solution and a rewarding revelation. Slick, color-saturated cartoon illustrations depict the animated, star-headed characters against their deep-toned galaxy setting, filled with familiar details—classroom desks, teacher’s briefcase—as well as planetary ones: the star-kids make a Big Dipper shape during “Constellation Tag,” for example. Playful endpapers include some facts, such as “Stars are balls of hot gas held together by gravity.” A sympathetic portrayal of overcoming disappointment and discovering personal talents. Grades 1-3. --Shelle Rosenfeld

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, March 3, 2010
This review is from: Twinkle, Star of the Week (Hardcover)
This book is wonderful! I was looking for a book to read to my daughter's class (she's 6) for when we're celebrating her being Star of the Week. So, this fit in perfectly for the occasion and for her age group. And the illustrations are terrific!

5.0 out of 5 stars This dazzling little story of Twinkle and her starry-eyed little classmates is a perfect introduction to the solar system!, March 10, 2010
This review is from: Twinkle, Star of the Week (Hardcover)
All the little stars sat at attention as Ms. Star made an announcement. She told the class that each one of them would get a turn to be "Star of the Week" and get a chance to sit in the blue Milky Way chair during share time. Shimmer didn't look overly enthusiastic and Blink had his eyes shut, but Twinkle was waaay excited because she wanted to be the superstar for the week and sing her favorite song. At Sky School it was a big honor and she wanted to be the superest superstar of them all. First it was Dazzle's turn and then it was Blaze's. He made asteroid cookies that were yummy, but Twinkle was determined her song would eclipse even something astronomical like that. She had to practice more because she was making some mistakes. "Twinkle, twinkle little star . . . "

Beamer was a big hit when he opened up a sack and his pink pet comet whooshed round and around the classroom. Twinkle fretted at night as she sat on her bed with her teddy. Gee, asteroids and comets would be hard to beat. Practice, practice, practice . . . she was down to two mistakes now. "Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are." Yep, she was going to be the superest superstar of them all. When Shimmer was the "Star of the Week" she had everyone play Constellation Tag. One by one they had their turns. Twinkle's turn was coming in a week and she was ready as could be. When Blink took his spot in the blue Milk Way chair Ms. Sun lifted up her finger and he began to sing. "Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are . . . " Of all the songs Blink could have chosen why did he pick hers? Now what was she going to do? It was a catastrophe!

This dazzling little story of Twinkle and her starry-eyed little classmates is a perfect introduction to the solar system. Many classrooms have their special traditions like share time where youngsters can showcase their talents or show and tell about something special they own. Most youngsters will be able to sympathize with Twinkle when Blink "steals" her song. The illustrations are vibrant, colorful and almost steal the show away from Twinkle and her classmates. In the end pages there are illustrations of the classmates and things we can see in the solar system. There are numerous interesting facts that can be discussed in the homeschool or classroom setting. For example, "There are over 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy." This delightful tale is one you might consider adding to your list!

5.0 out of 5 stars With a positive message of individual creativity and generosity, April 22, 2010
This review is from: Twinkle, Star of the Week (Hardcover)
"Twinkle, Star of the Week" is a children's picture book about the power of wishing, or ways to invent new solutions to old problems. Twinkle is a star in Sky School, and she looks forward to her day that she will be the Star of the Week. But what if another little star uses her idea before she gets to be star of the week (sharing her favorite song)? Although Twinkle is the sparkliest star in Ms. Sun's class, she is stumped for a new idea of what to share for her special Star of the Week day. A wonderful thing happens to Twinkle when she feels someone send her a wish from far away! Suddenly she knows just what to do! Children ages 6-8 will love "Twinkle, Star of the Week" and its positive message of individual creativity and generosity. Actual glitter embellishes the cover and the whimsical star illustrations are sure to catch young eyes and make them shine.
