a disconcertingly accurate portrayal of teen angst,
By book.of.the.moment "reviewer" (Maine, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twins (Paperback)
"Twins" is about..you guessed it, twin sisters Sue and Chloe. Chloe is four minutes older, and in Sue's mind, Chloe received all the advantages from the start. The story follows them through their high school careers..starting when they are 13 years old and get matching tatoos, to their senior year of high school as they are both contemplating college.More than just the story of sisters, this is a story packed full of emotions. Aside from the love and devotion shared between the sisters, we experience several of the not-so-good emotions with them as well: lonliness, frustration, envy, hatred..some are typical of teenage angst, others are downright disturbing. We're along through the rides as the sisters struggle to discover themselves and understand the world they live in. We're there through heartache, eating disorders, sexual discoveries and violence. Nothing is held back in "Twins." As a result, its somewhat disconcerting. It's raw and edgy in its own right, and its entertaining at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed it from the first page.

This is the story about twins Chloe and Sue. Chloe is the stronger more independent one, while Sue has always been in her shadow, always been insecure. Throughout the novel, Chloe and Sue (especially Sue) struggle to find their own idenities. Chloe tries to distance herself from Sue by becoming a basketball star's protegee. Sue on the other hand goes down the route of exploring drugs and her sexuality, among many other things. The novel goes back and forward between letting Sue and Chloe narrate the story and it works very well for the story. By the end of the story you'll feel like you know the girls! Great book!

Easy flowing read, disatisfied with the ending,
This review is from: Twins (Paperback)
Twins, I connected with Sue and Chloe right away, I was in aww on Sue's actions at the start, which made things interesting, with not knowing what would happen next.I was a bit disconnected with the whole absence with the parents. The tape recordings, tablets, and divorcing. It confused me. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this novel indefinantly. Marcy Dermansky had me hooked after reading "Bad Marie" (If you haven;t read it, it's a good read). The ending is what made my review a 4 star instead for that 5 star I so wanted to give. It left me hungry for more.Is there a sequel? I can'r wait until she comes out with another novel.

Uneventful,
By Meesha "I'm A Lonely Angel Stuck On The Slow ... (South Queensferry, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twins (Paperback)
I'm still not quite sure what attracted to me this book, apart from I had it on my wishlist for a while, and when I was checking it for books for my holiday, it was shockingly cheap. So I bought it.But it was quite dull actually. It covers roughly five years in twin girls lives, and it comes across as being a really obsessive relationship. It's very bittersweet as well, cos one girl, Sue, wants to be with her twin as much as possible, whereas Chloe is drawing herself further & further away. It follows the twins from their own troublesome relationship, to their relationship with their practically AWOL parents, to an older brother, to relationships at school, and afterwards. We follow them through eating disorders, grown up relationships with men and women, to finally accepting the other for who they are. The chapters are alternated between Sue & Chloe, each girl telling their side of the story, but it does get a bit tiresome. It has the tendancy to be a very bittersweet story, as Sue comes across as very hateful of her twin at times, and it was quite a difficult story to read. Granted, it was very well written, and the author got into the girls minds very well. But there's really nothing mind blowing about this book, I finished it in no time at all, and don't really remember particularly much about it. Perfect holiday fodder. But don't bother taking it home, it will take up room in your suitcase, and sit gathering dust as soon as you get home. |
