Book Description

April 28, 2003 New Speciality Titles
What do you say when you're pregnant and they tell you "There's a pair in there?" "Heeeeeeelp!" When these two authors discovered they were having twins, both had the same thought once they recovered from the shock: buy a book that explains what to expect in order to get organised and to prepare emotionally and physically for the anticipated upheaval to their lives. When they couldn't find such a text, they decided to write it themselves. Based on their own and other twin parents' experiences of pregnancy, birth and twin toddlers, Katrina and Louise offer sound practical advice that is backed up by medical practitioners and health professionals where relevant. Detailed information with user-friendly explanations of medical jargon is peppered with amusing and moving stories of catastrophe, chaos and coping. There are at-a-glance hints and tips at the end of each chapter and easy-reference tables of information throughout.

About the Author

Because of their active roles in the main support network for twin parents (AMBA), Louise and Katrina were aware of the need for a book which provided information on the workload and emotional turmoil experienced when parenting twins and which gave advice on how to cope. Louise Ryan has worked in the book trade for over fourteen years. She is the mother of 3-year-old non-identical twins, Camille and Celeste, conceived through the IVF program. As well as working full-time she is a Committee Member, Ante-Natal Coordinator and Librarian for the South Eastern Multiple Birth Association (SEMBA), hosting regular ante-natal information nights. Katrina Bowman is the mother of Charlotte and Ella, identical 2-year-old twins. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and over ten years experience in the Public Relations industry where she is currently working part-time. Katrina is a Committee Member and Social Secretary for SEMBA, where she organises a full program of social events to help parents of multiples to develop networks and to share information.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a lifesaver, April 3, 2003

This review is from: Twins (New Speciality Titles) (Paperback)
Katrina and Louise have written THE BIBLE for parents of twins and their friends and families. It begins with emotional reactions on finding out you're having two babies, takes you through a twin pregnancy, birth and those difficult early months with great medical advice and a good dose of humour. They interviewed 34 families with twins and have covered every aspect I could think of. From sibling reactions to marriage on the rocks and post natal depression. The design makes it easy to flick through and find the information you're after.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference, but didn't expect all the Australian references, May 23, 2007
By
Maybe I missed something before purchasing this book, but I didn't understand that the authors were from Australia. Although I wouldn't have expected that to make much of a difference, there are quite a few linguistic differences that take some getting used to (e.g., nappies/diapers, theatre nurse/OR nurse, etc.). There are also references to Australian resources and agencies that won't really help me here in the U.S.

Having said all that, though, the practical information is helpful and I found their birthing experiences to valuable. I recommend this book as long as you realize that some of the content may get lost in translation, so to speak.
