4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, So-So DVD
While this is a very enjoyable movie, the DVD doesn't have that same amazing quality of most DVDs. Still better than VHS, the DVD is too red and too noisy. There are no extras, no 5.1 audio, and no widescreen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, bad DVD
I love this movie; it's not my favorite, and I'm not very picky, but I was hoping for a better DVD version of it. It only comes in full screen and the picture looks pretty much the same as a VHS. I still enjoyed it of course, but it would be nice to see a better release sometime in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Comedy With Devito & Schwarzenegger !, August 5, 2002

(HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Twins (DVD)
With this movie Arnold Schwarzenegger showed just how long those muscular legs are in terms of talent, range, and intelligence. This is a wry, wistful, and lovely movie that illustrates how easily Schwarzenegger could switch gears from the heavy action-oriented vehicles that had made him a star to more sentimental and purposeful films that intentionally made audiences both laugh and think. Indeed, hidden in all this well-choreographed slapstick is a self-deprecating kind of intelligent humor no one suspected the big guy to be capable of. Matched memorably with Danny Devito as the twin trapped with all the bad genetics even as Schwarzenegger ended up with the great genes and the life associated with it, the two work off each other in a movie so funny it is hard to try to describe.

Every thing about the sequences works, from Arnie's naïve wonder with all the new experiences to his ear-phoned airplane accompaniment to "Yackety-Yak". Watching him do something as straightforward as walking down the street in suit coat and Bermuda shorts becomes an exercise in comic genius, with both the scriptwriters and director Ivan Reitman working overtime to create this comic masterpiece. Devito is in rare form, and we find ourselves empathizing with this guy who discovers he came from the throwaway sperm that was used to create his brother, the wunderkind. No wonder his life has been a virtual wallowing in the wastelands! Yet from the first meeting there seems to be an almost magical connection between the twin brothers, and Reitman has scrupulously given us a repertoire of little aspects or facets of each that lend credibility to this idea of a familial bond.

This movie ensured Schwarzenegger's wider appeal to audiences beyond the action and sci-fi genre. Indeed, he repeated the comedic magic a few years later with "Kindergarten Cop", which while not as phenomenal a hit as was "Twins" was also an interesting diversion from what one would ordinarily come to expect from an Arnold epic. Also helping here is a strong supporting cast; including Kelly Preston as Arnie's love interest and Chloe Webb as Devito's enduring girl friend. This is a movie so full of rapid fire comic scenes such as the quick shot at Sylvester Stallone's self-conscious muscle-man pose poster for Rambo II that one recognizes the good-natured jibe at an action-star rival as all in good humor; Arnie and Sly were said to be at odds with each other at the time. And this is a movie the whole family can laugh at, and while there are some adult situations, there is not much blue language or objectionable behavior for a parent to worry about. I can highly recommend this film. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic, May 2, 2007

This is such a great movie, but the dvd is really not too good. Like many other great older movies, the studio has not given this movie the proper dvd transfer that it diserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'll never grow tired of this movie, November 1, 2004
This review is from: Twins (DVD)
I've seen this movie a zillion times, and was quite shocked when I bought and watched the DVD, as the version I'd taped off the TV years ago, was edited beyond belief! There was a lot of 'unsavoury' language cut out, and sometimes, even full jokes! I didn't recognise half of the early scenes when Julius & Vincent are in Vincent's house, as there's bits about Julius still being a virgin at 35 (and I thought I was a late starter!)

Arnie & Danny Devito are a great comedic pairing in this movie, Danny tall as he is wide, and Arnie showing off his muscles. They also starred together in Junior, which, despite what one reviewer said, is NOT a sequel to this!

The poster is enough to tell if you'll like this or not. If you think the casting of Arnie and Danny is amusing as a little and large combo then you'll probably like this. If you think it dumb then you may not appreciate this. The comedy is very much a mix of odd-couple and fish-out-of-water style jokes from Julius as opposed to the streetwise Vincent. The plot is largely meaningless - a mix of the two taking a secret engine across country while looking for their mother, and throw in two pretty girls (Chloe Webb & John Travolta's future wife, Kelly Preston).

All the fish-out-of-water jokes are funny, but sometimes not laugh out loud hilarious. It works mainly due to the casting of the lead two. Danny plays the sleazy one very well but the best one is Arnie - he merely plays a big naïve lump of muscle. However what he does do is allow himself to be sent up very well - you have to look out for it in most of his movies now, he always sends himself up somehow! Whether it be him making little knowing jokes (`I'll be back' or comparing muscles with Stallone on his Rambo poster) or just being the straightman to DeVito's set up jokes.

This is a great movie, although it's practically sacriledge that it's a full-screen edition, and has no extras. The film starts straight away, no main menu, and also has a little bit at the start where it says that English is the chosen language for this DVD, you can choose your own language later! Or have the subtitles on. Junior is not as good, mainly because it has the very annoying woman in it, who's name escapes me at the moment. You know, the annoying blonde one. A great movie and funny, especially if you've seen the edited TV version!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a funny movie, November 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Twins (DVD)
Wow twins is one of those movies you just got to laugh at. It tells the story of two completely differeent people who were mixed together in a lab and are twins. One Arnols Schwarzenegger a 200 pound muscle man from a tropical island. ANd Danny Devito a 100 pound short man with a bad attitude. Throughout the movie Arnold and Danny search to find their real mom and bond at the same time. There's a part where Arnold is forced to borrrow one of Danny's shirts. Though physically impossible due to the fact Arnold has a chest about 15 inches bigger than Danny's...but o well. Anyway Arnold's bicep is so big that it eventually rips the shirt!!! So they go to a grocery store to get him a new shirt. I was then introduced to how muscluar Arnold really was. He was in great shape. WOW WHAT A CHEST. Buy this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars arnold shows his range here, September 26, 2001
This review is from: Twins (DVD)
When I first saw this film, I did not like it, but somthing told me to watch it again, & the second time around I loved it, and have ever since, once you get past the shallow back story, this film will entertain you, it is without a doubt a film the whole family could enjoy. Arnold tried to do somthing different here and did & Danny DeVito reminds you why he is so fuuny & serious at the same time, a fun film for those who don't take it so seriously, my only complaint about this DVD is the Full Frame version, Universal should reconsider rereleasing a widescreen version, they have with their other films that came out at about the same time, why not this one? hopefully they will someday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant Comedy. Jeff Beck is Great in This!, September 9, 2001

Mark James (Liverpool, UK) - See all my reviews

I saw this movie a while ago (maybe 9 years!) for the first time. I now own this movie and it's just a brilliant watch! I never get tired watching two well loved actors acting in a situation that would probably never him to them in real life! There are so damn funny moments in this movie. Check out the 'Sperm Milkshake'! This is a great comedy that seems always fresh to watch and it's got everything you could possibly want in a comedy movie; loads of gags, two great actors and a brilliant storyline. Also check out the greatest guitarist on earth Mr. Jeff Beck in the club when they're dancing! COOL!

Arnold and Danny work so great together. Danny is so funny and arnold brings a different aspect to the movie. he usually does action, but he does real good in this comedy with the help of Danny Devito. i reccomend this to all arnold fans who want to see him in something besides action or any body who love danny devito.
