She quit a high-profile position on Capitol Hill, packed her bags, and moved to Atlanta, where she knew no one but Alphonso, a flame that has been cooling for the last two years. Struggling to find a job, love, and happiness with herself, Sharin enlists the help of Dr. Gregory Bailey to sort out the mess she calls her life. During her therapy sessions, Sharin details her disdain with politics and the search for that first post-college job, her issues with starting and maintaining relationships, and her string of past love affairs that have battered her expectations of men. As Sharin encounters new love and a new professional opportunity, can she learn from the baggage she's still trying to sort out?

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't Get It Together!, November 20, 2009

The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
TWIST by Angie L. Jennings is Sharin's story of attempting to get her life together. She has always been smart, pretty, a good student and is attending college. Her roommate is a girl she knew back home but that arrangement doesn't last long. Sharin is tired of being put down by her roommate and others. She asks for a new room and gets it. After she graduates, she moves to Atlanta where the only person she knows is one of her old flames, Alphonso, but he isn't very supportive. His mother is a preacher and he has gone back to pleasing her which means no spending the night with Sharin, and he rarely even calls her. Sharin talks with a therapist, Dr. Bailey, in an attempt to sort out her life and become happier and during her sessions with the doctor, we learn about her life. She has moved from man to man, always seeming to choose the wrong one. She wants a relationship but all she gets are one night stands and sex with no attachments. She would love to have someone she could really care about and better yet, would care about her. Dr. Bailey attempts to help her get there. On her new job in Atlanta, she meets a man who just might fit the picture.

TWIST is an interesting story of a young woman who seems unaware of how attractive and smart she is and therefore goes for the lowly men who mean her no good. Will she ever be able to lift herself up so she will find that one man who really cares for her? It is an interesting book, especially for those women who are similar to Sharin.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Take You Back to College!, June 22, 2009
By
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
The majority of this novel takes place on the couch at the office of Sharin Downs' therapist. With her therapist's help, Sharin sorts through her college romances in an effort to figure herself out. I enjoyed this book because her emotions and questions about love, relationships, and romance were real and relatable. Jennings' descriptions of the college town and Sharin's friends put you right there in the midst of the story like a third-party. The timeline was a little hard to follow but overall a great read! I am recommending to my friends and family!

4.0 out of 5 stars A real, raw, emotional exploration., May 27, 2009
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
This first novel by Angie Jennings was a great read! Filled with self-analyzing and honest dialogue, it is refreshing to see realistic post-college life and struggle through such a relatable character. Sharin faces the predicament that so many young adults go through after college - NOW WHAT? I worked so hard, where is my dream job??? Along with her therapist, Sharin tries to find her way, emotionally and physically, to the utopian post-college career and state of happiness and accomplishment that should be her just due. The writing is filled with freestyle patterns of real-time thought that make the character seem very alive and reachable. There are twists (of course) and turns along the way, and Sharin of course comes out calmer and wiser in the end. I hope to hear more about Ms. Jenning's character's growth in a sequel someday!
