Can't Get It Together!,
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
TWIST by Angie L. Jennings is Sharin's story of attempting to get her life together. She has always been smart, pretty, a good student and is attending college. Her roommate is a girl she knew back home but that arrangement doesn't last long. Sharin is tired of being put down by her roommate and others. She asks for a new room and gets it. After she graduates, she moves to Atlanta where the only person she knows is one of her old flames, Alphonso, but he isn't very supportive. His mother is a preacher and he has gone back to pleasing her which means no spending the night with Sharin, and he rarely even calls her. Sharin talks with a therapist, Dr. Bailey, in an attempt to sort out her life and become happier and during her sessions with the doctor, we learn about her life. She has moved from man to man, always seeming to choose the wrong one. She wants a relationship but all she gets are one night stands and sex with no attachments. She would love to have someone she could really care about and better yet, would care about her. Dr. Bailey attempts to help her get there. On her new job in Atlanta, she meets a man who just might fit the picture.
TWIST is an interesting story of a young woman who seems unaware of how attractive and smart she is and therefore goes for the lowly men who mean her no good. Will she ever be able to lift herself up so she will find that one man who really cares for her? It is an interesting book, especially for those women who are similar to Sharin. This Book Will Take You Back to College!,
By R. Light "Loves Books" (Richmond, Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
The majority of this novel takes place on the couch at the office of Sharin Downs' therapist. With her therapist's help, Sharin sorts through her college romances in an effort to figure herself out. I enjoyed this book because her emotions and questions about love, relationships, and romance were real and relatable. Jennings' descriptions of the college town and Sharin's friends put you right there in the midst of the story like a third-party. The timeline was a little hard to follow but overall a great read! I am recommending to my friends and family!

A real, raw, emotional exploration.,
By
This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
This first novel by Angie Jennings was a great read! Filled with self-analyzing and honest dialogue, it is refreshing to see realistic post-college life and struggle through such a relatable character. Sharin faces the predicament that so many young adults go through after college - NOW WHAT? I worked so hard, where is my dream job??? Along with her therapist, Sharin tries to find her way, emotionally and physically, to the utopian post-college career and state of happiness and accomplishment that should be her just due. The writing is filled with freestyle patterns of real-time thought that make the character seem very alive and reachable. There are twists (of course) and turns along the way, and Sharin of course comes out calmer and wiser in the end. I hope to hear more about Ms. Jenning's character's growth in a sequel someday!

The harshest thing of all is life. "Twist" is the story of Sharin Downs, a woman who quit her job, has no real friends, and is quickly losing both the love and lust of her boyfriend. As she attends therapy, she reveals her thoughts and feelings, and it's soon explained why her life has been on such a downward spiral over the past few years. "Twist" is a very human story of life and relationships, a fine recommendation for literary fiction readers.

What's Next...,

This review is from: Twist (Paperback)
Sharin Downs 'aka' Twist, is 24 years- old and trying like hell to figure out what her life's passion is. She quit her high-profile job on Capitol Hill, packed all her belongings and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. The only person she knew was an old flame, named Alphonso. She tries to find a job, but unfortunately jobs are hard to come by, so she goes from one meaningless job to the next. When it comes to her love life, she is just as unlucky.
With the help of Dr. Gregory Bailey, she begins to divulge her innermost thoughts and secrets as she tries to untangle the mess she calls her life. Sharin shares her college experiences and the men she has been intimate with. Each man took something out of her. When she finally meets a man that wants to share more with her, than just her body, she rushes into a relationship just to be let down once again. Will Sharin finally find happiness and love? Twist by Angie L. Jennings was a good read for the most part. The only two issues I had with this novel were : 1. that it went back and forth from the past to the present too much. It would not have been so bad if there was better distinction between the character's past; maybe using italics or a different style. Then I think it would have been less confusing to readers. 2. The story lacked focus and seemed to be all over the place. Other than these two issues this book would have easily received 4 stars. Reviewed by Leona R. APOOO BookClub

Twist by Angie L. Jennings is the story of a young woman whose life becomes so twisted with shame, hurt, and pain that she hires a therapist to help rebuild her self-worth. Sharin, who was nicknamed Twist back in college, reflects on her school life, where a series of failed friendships and other relationships make her question her love for herself. There were times throughout the book when I thought Angie L. Jennings was videotaping my personal life!
Twist is a realistic story about a college girl who, by searching for love the wrong way, becomes numb to her own desires and real love. The writing style is authentic and personal. I was highly engaged in this book due to it feeling as if it were an autobiography or biography of one of my friends. 5 Pink Diamonds Sistah Shauna of the SistahFriend Book Club

I never knew what a true bag lady was until I read this story. Sharin has held on to so many things. She gets into schemes with people just to help them out. She can't always find her niche. She does have a therapist who assists her in that . He discusses her life from childhood through college and her relationships trigger so much. Her family life is shaky, her relationships seem meaningless and she always ends up taking care of people One guy she met in college that she was so in love or infatuated with, but they never had an official title. They were in college and he pledged but he continued to pursue her. Once he finished pledging he dropped her and she never got over it. The next situation was another guy . Very similar story just a different day. This guy got into the church and then no longer wanted to "be" with her but still wanted to have relations with her. Will seeing her therapist allow her drop her baggage or will she carry more? What will make her reevaluate what's going on in her life? Will she have to start over? Will things take a twist? Check out this book and see what things you may need to drop.
