DD is of course a titan in New Zealand music history, and perhaps hasnt made the transition to the larger world as readily as his talent should have promised. Some of these songs are written with tongue firmly in cheek, some will take your breath away at their intimacy. For me, Naked Flame is the highlight of the album, this album doesnt occupy the angst ridden high ground of a David Gray or a James Blunt, but skirts merrily around the foothills occaisionally flicking 2 fingers up at those "more worthy" pretenders. If you like someone like Paddy Casey, buy this album and enjoy it.

This is Kiwi rocker Dave Dobbyn's 1994 solo CD - coming after 1993's "Lament for the Numb." Dave has been around since the late 70's in various Auckland bands - The Dudes, DD Smash, and is a bit of a beloved elder statesman of pop in N.Z. His solo work is a progression of years of song writing craft in these popular kiwi bands.
He has always been in the shadow of the Finn brothers somewhat and seems to be relatively unknown outside of Australasia, which is disappointing really considering his talent.
Here he teams up with some well-known friends; Neil Finn produces and helps out on guitar while brother Tim Finn sings backing on some tracks. Anika Moa also helps out on one song. There are some standouts here - "Naked Flame" is a gem and my favourite. I also like "What do you really want" and "Protection" also.
If you like Neil Finn you will find Dobbyn's songs enjoyable, although if you are new to his music I would recommend starting off with his 1988 solo CD "Loyal".
