Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-A story about friendship that captures the importance of accepting one another regardless of differences. Ernest is a lonely little donkey who wants to befriend a beautiful show horse. At first the proud equine doesn't want to be bothered by the smaller creature, but Ernest's persistence and enthusiasm win him over. Unfortunately, the author overstates the message rather than letting the animals' reactions speak for themselves. Also, some of the dialogue is stilted. The illustrations in soft watercolors in earth-and-natural tones are realistic and appealing, though the donkey's ears are inordinately long. The facial expressions of the animals reflect the sentimentality of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Children will fall in love with the magic of Ernest!", February 25, 2000
By
Kerry Mulvey (Newtown Square, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Twist and Ernest (Ernest series) (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful story about friendship that captures the importance of accepting each other regardless of our differences. Children will fall for the determined little donkey, Ernest, as he gives the stubborn horse, Twist, a great life lesson in love and friendship. My 6 and 3 year old boys have taken these two characters into their imaginary worlds and now create their own adventures that take place on the farm. The illustrations are masterful and real, yet cuddly enough to capture the attention of pre-reading youngsters. The text is to the point and interesting as the story unfolds. You'll find yourself rooting for the donkey from the outset and when he finds success, you feel the warmth of the bond the two characters have discovered. We hope that there will be more work from this wonderful new author and look forward to reading more about our new friends, Twist & Ernest!

Twist & Ernest is a book that will bring a smile to your face whether you are a child or adult. I could not wait to share it with my girls. We each have our favorite part, but we all agree Ernest is adorable. The story reminds us that everyone has something special to bring to a friendship, a friend can be found in anyone and true friendship is a wonderful thing.
