Waited a while for this, and I like it a lot. She has changed things up
somewhat, but overall still has her signature sound. Very nice release!

Twist the Truth,
This review is from: Twist the Truth (Audio CD)
4/5. The road to "Twist the Truth" took one of the saddest pop stars in Scandinavia long four years to go, but it was definitely worth the wait. The album is completely different from the first three releases, featuring melancholic acoustic pop with a strong "unplugged" feel throughout the album. Most of the tracks are drowning in mournful strings with subtle acoustic guitars and Lene's voice - now a little more mature - positioned upfront and delivering a truly emotional experience of love and pain it brings along all the time. As Lene Marlin stated in one of her recent interviews, she would never be able to do a happy album and that she quit writing hit songs. It shows on this album. Lines like "Don't bother look for me - Not even sure that you would" on "Come Home" and "Keeping my distance - I look but I don't really see - It's like things lose their colour - And people are walking right through me" on the first single "Here We Are" are classic Lene Marlin, sounding more natural than ever. The sound is warm and has elements of country and folk music in places. The pure and honest appearance of songs makes messages even stronger, emphasizing outstanding singer-songwriter abilities.
Although the album might sound as one long song at the first album, it grows on you. One of the greatest songs on the album is "You Could Have", which sounds like one of the most moving songs of Lene's careers. Although the version presented on the album is shorter and much lighter than the initial version presented at the 2007 Døngvil festival in Tromsø, it is still great with a slow build up from acoustic guitars to piano, keyboards, percussion and a powerful crescendo in the end. Another strong moment is about lyrics on "Do You Remember" - a painful look back at carefree childhood days before the heavy duties of adulthood put their merciless claws into you. "Have I Ever Told You" is one of the glossy songs on "Twist the Turth", featuring an energetic drum beat and a groovy bass line with Lene's excellent vocal performance on top. The music on "Twist the Truth" is quite different to that on her first album "Playing My Game". But as years go by Lene is delivering exactly what her fans are expecting and wish for - mature and melancholic pop that may even be eligible for the adult contemporary category. --Sain Alizada
