Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Twisted Cakes subverts sugary sweet cakes and celebration baking to produce designs with a nod to the dark side, all executed with a wicked sense of humor. From eyeball mini cakes for Halloween to a cake that looks like a lamb chop to amaze barbecue guests, there's a daring design for every occasion, including Valentine's Day, weddings, birthdays, and special events.

The author of Twisted Cakes, Debbie Goard, is an innovative Californian cake maker who has appeared on The Food Network, has a large internet following, and teaches classes on baking and cake creating to a wealth of eager students. Her instructions are easy to follow, even for the most challenging designs, and the 20 cake designs and recipes featured in Twisted Cakes are each accompanied by full-color photos.

Goard's cake-making directions will whet appetites and please novice and experienced bakers. As an added bonus for readers, the back of the book contains a pocket with design templates and stencils to create all of the terrifying cakes, such as the knife shape for stabbed cupcakes and ear and heart shapes for the 'Ears to You Dear' cake. Think of Twisted Cakes as a guide to making unique, creepy, crafts that are hard to look away from.

Ok, confession time: I haven't made one of these cakes yet. BUT I love the range of options, the very cool creepy not-your-grandmother's cakes styles. And if you've visited DebbieDoesCakes.net, you can see that she is a truly talented lady who can make shockingly realistic items out of cake. So it's wonderful that she's sharing her secrets with us home-cooks and wanna-be's. I love how carefully she breaks it down, and I can't wait to try it myself, with my mid-level cooking skills. But if you're in the Bay Area and you're looking for an original cake, do look her up! She's completely worth the price. Because the one thing not included in this book is her incredible talent.

While I am completely grossed out by the subject matter, this book is worth the price for the structural information alone. I have followed Debbie's work since I first "met" her on Flickr in 2007 or so. I was always fascinated by the seemingly impossible (gravitationally speaking) cakes she produced.

I was thrilled with the (really freaky) two-headed pig cake, as Debbie provided instructions that I could use for my very first attempt at a standing 3D cake. While my My Little Pony was no where near being as perfect and polished as Debbie's work, there is NO way I would have been able to even attempt such a thing without some help.

The entire time I was working on that cake, I was inwardly fuming at sugarartist "radkoguy"'s review relegating Debbie's book to the bargain book bin. Firstly: What a rotten thing to say! Secondly: So what if some of the designs are "hardly ground-breaking"? I have a gigantic collection of cake books, and I have been decorating for quite a few years now, and I have yet to see another book with this kind of information in it. There are plenty of very useful techniques demonstrated here.

My summation: The designs are completely gross, but that was the entire point here. There is a ton of useful information for creating sculpted cakes in general, and I'm grateful to Debbie for sharing her knowledge with us. I'm looking forward to Debbie's next book!

I am so happy to see Debbie Goard finally write a book! She is one of the most talented cake designers out there and she IS "OUT THERE!" lol.

This book is written so that someone with basic cake construction, airbrushing and fondant skills can manage to re-create some of the wonderful cakes in the book. Not really written for someone with very basic or elementary cake skills but if you have delivered a few Wedding cakes that have not toppled or collapsed and have your basic fondant skill and would like a bit of a challenge, then THIS book is for you.

I love the fact that Debbie Goard has included the templates in a pouch at the end of the book. Debbie, then takes the extra step to tell you what to do to preserve these templates. The cakes in "TWISTED CAKES" by DEBBIE GOARD can be done. You can't really fail with her instructions, picture tutorials and you can take many, many ideas from how she stages her cakes.

Great job Debbie, I can't wait for her next book to come out.

I absolutely love this book and cant wait for Debbie to do another one! I have been baking for over two years and had yet to do a cake with structure. I was actually nervous to even try because the thought of drilling holes, screwing rods, and sculpting was intimidating and all new to me. This book has a lot of really cool cakes (really good for halloween) with very clear step by step instructions/pictures. I did the "scared teddy" cake to start with and was very happy to see how easy it really was! and even happier with the results which i posted under the book images. GREAT BOOK! trust me, you will not be disappointed!

I've been a huge fan of Debbie's cakes for many years now. It doesn't take much work for find examples of her cakes all over the net. I was thrilled when I heard that Debbie was writing a book and even more thrilled to purchase it. The book includes recipes, tutorials, lots of wonderful pictures and even templates. This book is made for people who delight in the horror movies and gory fun. Need to know how to make a cake look blood spattered? This is your book. Need to know how to make a severed arm? This is your book. This book, like Debbie, is full of WIN!

This book gives only a smidgen of Debbie's "art". I have used her talent for several cakes now and even cupcakes. Although my cakes weren't scary, evil, creepy, or from the dark side...if I ever need one of those, she is my "go to" girl. She gives step-by-step instructions and pictures and templates for any of you do-it-yourselfers. I have it on my coffee table and it's definitely a conversation starter. Go Debbie!!
