5.0 out of 5 stars Well deserved tribute!!, August 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Twisted Forever (Audio CD)
Honestly, I was a bit of a skeptic when I first heard of this tribute album. I'm a huge fan but wasn't sure I wanted to hear 15 bands messing with their songs. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised! I liked it so much, I'm going to critique every freakin' song! :D

(1) First of all, Lit did a great version of "I Wanna Rock". They didn't make any drastic changes and in fact, Dee's doing some background vocals on it.

(2) Then Motorhead did "Shoot 'em Down" in typical Motorhead fashion - rough and dirty! (TS gives Motorhead a lot of credit for helping them break out).

(3) Nashville Pussy, who also appeared on the Strangeland soundtrack, did an excellent job on "The Kids Are Back".

(4) Now here's one that caught me off guard - Nine Days totally changed the background music to "The Price" and altered the vocal styling a bit... and it worked great! I'd love to hear this on the radio today! Without a doubt! A new hit!

(5) This one may be tough for hardcore fans since it barely even sounds like the original song! But by the time I got to the end of it, I was thinking... this is damn cool! In fact, that was one of coolest things about the album - each artist did their own interpretation. This may be one of the better songs on the album.

(6) Aaaaahhhh... crunch and more crunch. Anthrax did exactly what we would expect from such an amazing band - they took Destroyer to the next level. That's all I can say! Get this album, crawl inside and live in it!

(7) This is another of my favorites. I might not have expected it early on but after hearing this, it's obvious: Overkill was the perfect choice for this song! It slices, it dices, it even makes your ears bleed! OK... ya, it's got crunch and double-bass and powerful vocals. Damn, it smokes!

(8) Completely insane... and I love it!

(9) No let down here... hey a pun!

(10) This one kills! Heavier than the original, but still the same tune. Eat this up!

(11) Very different from the original. Slower. Took some time to catch on since most interpretations up to this point were either heavier or faster. I think it works though.

(12) I always thought some of Dee's rebellious anthems had a bit of a punk feel to them and here's proof. Joan Jett gives this one a great punk rock feel. Honestly I didn't like it at first. It didn't seem powerful enough, but after a couple listens, it really works. Is Joan Jett getting younger?! She sounds damn good here! Thought I was listening to a new girl punk band or something. This is good!

(13) I was looking forward to this for a long time! Sebastian Bach fronting Twisted Sister! This one rocked! Simple. Loved it!

(14) Hammerfall does a great early 80's metal version (like Tyton... or Hammerfall!) of "We're Gonna Make It"

(15) No surprise that Sevendust is on here since Jay Jay French manages them. Damn good band and a damn good cover. Much faster!

(16) This was TS's tribute to AC/DC. Great to hear a new recording of the whole band - IT BETTER NOT BE THE LAST!

OK, there you have it. One hell of a tribute to one the hardest working bands ever! This is powerful stuff people! If you're a Twisted Sister fan, GET THIS! If you're not - become one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great tribute to a great band., February 25, 2002
This review is from: Twisted Forever (Audio CD)
It helps to enjoy this CD if you are already a Twisted Sister fan, because then you can appreciate the way these talented bands paid tribute to one of their main influences. Aside from Joan Jett's terrible butchering of "We're Not Gonna Take It", this is an enjoyable listen. The tracks that stood out for me are: Motorhead's "Shoot 'Em Down," Chuck D's "Wake up The Sleeping Giant," and Sevendust's "I am (I'm Me)" (Sevendust pulled off a rare feat: making a cover that is better than the original). Get this if you're a true S.M.F.

4.0 out of 5 stars They wanna rock!, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Twisted Forever (Audio CD)
Tribute albums are always hit or miss, so I didn't have high hopes for the Twisted Forever tribute to heavy metal icons Twisted Sister. Still, I was reassured a little when I saw that it featured actual bands performing and not just the usual assortment of C-list hair metallers I'm used to seeing on those Cleopatra tribute albums.

The album starts on the right foot with the band Lit. I know what you're thinking, but those "My Own Worst Enemy" idiots actually manage a killer version of "I Wanna Rock." After that, Motorhead lights things up with a fierce rendition of "Shoot `em Down." It ought to be all downhill from there, but there are some really impressive entries from Anthrax, Overkill, Cradle of Filth Hammerfall. There are also some less stellar, but still totally decent, entries by Fu Manchu, Sevendust and Sebastian Bach. The only real duds here are Joan Jett's lackluster performance of "We're Not Gonna Take It" and Chuck D's "Wake Up the Sleeping Giant." Chuck D is great, but he sounds like he's mumbling over some 80's Casio special effects here. The album closes with Twisted Sister themselves doing a cover of AC/DC's "Sin City." Now that's hard to beat.

Overall I give this one a thumbs-up. It's one of the rare tributes that's both respectful of the original material and entertaining on its own merits. Twisted Sister fans should love this one, as should anyone who wants to rock.
