Editorial Review

Suffering from road rage? Prefer offensive driving? Check out Twisted Metal 4, the latest edition in PlayStation's bestselling demolition derby franchise. The game opens with news of the return of Sweet Tooth, this title's maniacal clown who is up to his not-so-funny antics again. Along with a horde of mini-sized clowns, he presents eight interactive battlegrounds on which to do combat, including his bedroom, the carnival, and eight hidden levels.

These new environments have more traps and gizmos than previous Twisted Metal games, including randomly deposited gas barrels, secret areas, and new weapons in larger quantities. The game also introduces the ability to drive on walls and make giant leaps from building to building. Players can choose from 20 new characters and deathmobiles, including a demented family with a fierce station wagon or rock star Rob Zombie's Dragula mobile. Also new to this edition of the car-combat freak show is the "create a car" option, which allows you to customize a car's size, color, model, and special weapon. The rock and rap soundtrack for this combat chaos is provided by Rob Zombie, Cypress Hill, Cirrus, Ghoulspoon, One Minute Silence, and Skold. A multi-tap (sold separately) allows up to four people to play at once. --Carrie Bell

Pros:

  • The next installment in an already successful franchise
  • New cars, new characters, and a new plot
  • Up to 4 players can hit the road with a multi-tap (sold separately)
Cons:
  • Camera angle problems can cause poor visibility during combat
  • Almost as many moves and button configurations to memorize as in a fighting game

5.0 out of 5 stars The best twisted metal yet!, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Twisted Metal 4 (Video Game)
When Twisted metal 1 came out, I had never seen a game where you blow other cars up. I played this game for a long time awaiting the next great version.#2 was great with huge levels, and fast action. Again, awaiting 3 with great expectations.I bought 3 the day it came out.Upon playing 3 for the first time, it didn't even play like twisted metal. I had hoped that it would get better, but it just kept getting worse! All the fast action was gone, the levels were too small.I hardly played #3 within 2 weeks of purchase. Instead, I played Vigilante 8. Heard Twisted 4, was in development-I didn't even get excited due to #3. Of course being me, I bought #4 the day it debuted not knowing what to expect. From the second that I played it I knew that IT WAS THE BEST ONE! The cars now have reflections on them, & the explosions are tremendous. There's always fire on the screen somewhere, not to mention how much weapons are now available.Everywhere you look now weapons are laying around. The level designs are really good & they're huge. I've played thru the levels many, many times now & haven't found all secret paths. There are more characters than any other Twisted Metal,& more levels. Also, eight death-match only levels. These levels look like something off Tron. The challenge of the game isnt too hard nor easy. The create a car mode is really cool. You can pick body style, paint job, special weapon,& the scream when you die.Now you can save all your cars that you create,& the poeple you beat the game with-allowing you to watch their endings at anytime. The memory card option is the best thing that could have ever happened.I can't say that the endings are any better than #3, but all in all this is the best Twisted Metal YET! Get it as soon as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Twisted Metal Ever!, November 23, 1999
By A Customer
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Twisted Metal 4 (Video Game)
Like the other review(s), I loved TM1 from the start. A game in which blowing up cars wasn't just a great idea, but it was backed up with many missles and goodies to beat your opponent into the pavement. The endings were shotty, but with a great game like this, it wouldn't matter. Twisted Metal 2 was too cartoonish, which lead the game away from being as dark as the 1st one. But so be it...endings were better, cars were more graphic, and lush backrounds made way for great gameplay. Then, the unthinkable. TM3. 989 demolished its rep. and ruined it for game players. Endings were turned into horrible puns, cars were ruined with cartoon characters, and comic book strip faces took the place of drivers. I stopped playing twisted metal entirely. When I heard they were making a 4th installment, I was in awe. After they ruined the series, they had the nerve to come back and put out another worthless game. But my hypothesis was wrong. I bought the game the 1st day it came out. But before I did, I went online to view graphics and story. When i heard Sweet Tooth had overthrown Calipso, I began to think that maybe they started thinking at 989 studios. I was right about that. After playing and beating the game with 2 characters, Sweet Tooh and Orbital, I can offcially say that this is the best one yet. No more writing down passwords for a saved game, better and true endings, about 17 new cars, new bosses, new story, and great graphics. The only bad thing is what they did with Mr. Grimm. He is now a pirate. Otherwise, I couldn't of thought of a better way to spend my money. So if anyone thinks that 989 can't pull it off and is delaying buying this game, don't. TM4 is great! I look forward to a TM5 in the furture...hopefully Crimson Fury will return (best car ever)!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lets Be Serious Here, December 14, 1999

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

Wait a minute, how can you be serious with so many explosions all over the place. 989 Studios has revived the Twisted Metal name with this one. I was not pleased with Twisted III and was very skeptical about the release of 4, especially since 989 was still a part of it. They have fully redeemed themselves, now 4 offers packed action, a nice mix of weaponry, diverse levels, computer allies, create a car, and of course total chaos. If you enjoyed Twisted 2, you will probably LOVE Twisted 4. The music, the levels, and the use of memory card, have really enhanced this title. Let's hope the series continues! Bottom line: Great car combat action that is well worth the price tag.
