I've been playing the Ps1 twisted metal games for years. At first this game seemed a little hard for me, but later I tried it again and I became a slave to it!
The graphics are nothing short of mindblowing. With every missle shot the explosion leaves an amazing sparkle. I guess the reasons the graphics seem so good is because I've gotten really used to the previous versions. There are up to fift-teen characters you can have after you unlock all of them, and ten different levels for multiplayer mode. On endurance mode I played as Minion and murdered about 430 cars before I died! The music is pretty decent because the last Twisted Metal games were beside metal music and I'm not too big of a fan for metal. After matches end, the next one is started usually without waiting any time to load. The down sides to this game is you can't play two player death matches with enemies. Also there are different playable levels for one player mode than for multiplayer mode. Unlocking other new cars involve procedures on the Internet which are long and complicated, especially for that Axel character. From wikipedia, here's the list of characters: Default characters: Junkyard Dog, a stereotypical redneck farmer driving a tow truck. Brimstone, a delusional evangelist rejected by the church, on a white El Camino. Outlaw, a former sniper for the local SWAT team, driving a S.W.A.T. SUV. Mr. Grimm, a cannibalistic Vietnam War veteran on an armored motorcycle. Road Kill, a former member of a small-time gang on a green scrap-car. Crazy 8, a former and disfigured underground boxer on a modified classic, VW Beetle-like car Spectre, a lovesick bridesmaid on a blue Corvette. Darkside, a former assistant for a maskmaker, driving a black semi truck with a police car chained to the grill. Shadow, a schoolgirl outcast on a lavender hearse. Sweet Tooth, a mass murderer on an ice cream truck. Unlockable characters: Yellow Jacket, a beat-up yellow taxi cab driven by Charlie Kane and his son. Axel, locked into a wheeled torture device. Manslaughter, a mysterious contestant on a dump truck. Warthog, a killer driving a station wagon mounted to a flametank. Minion, the winner of last year's tournament on a tanker truck.

It's been nearly seven years since I first played this game and after playing Twisted Metal: Head On-Extra Twisted Edition I just needed to get this game again.
This game is much darker than previous Twisted Metals' in both appearence and presentation. The characters aren't cartoony and tongue in cheek like in Twisted Metal 2 but they're rather macabre and disturbed. Just about all of them comes from a mental asylum that looks like something out of Batman. The levels are very dark as well. The game returns to the familar city atmosphere used in Twisted Metal 1 but gives it a paint job of blood and black that makes everything look decayed and dying. Gameplay is tight as hell and is a major relief after the disaster that was Twisted Metal 3 and 4's "true physics" that Sony thought was a great idea but turned out to be a horror show on wheels. Familar favorites return: Yellow Jacket, Darkside, Outlaw, Mr. Grimm, Shadow, Axel, Warthog, Sweet Tooth, Minion, Spectre and Roadkill; while new comers Manslaughter, Brimstone, Junkyard Dog and Crazy 8 join the Twisted Metal universe. This game is a masterpiece from beginning to end and should be in EVERY PS2 owners game collection.

Simply put, this is just Twisted Metal: Black, with new online capabilities. The graphics are awesome, and the characters are awesome. The gameplay, too, is awesome. If you want to play online, this is the version you want. If not, get the original.

Fantastic game-play, and the weapons and characters are well-varied. The violence is unrealistic enough to not be too jading. However, the unlockable items are difficult to achieve for single-player, and the only non-works-based incentive is to unlock relatively mundane story lines. Possibly the best multiplayer arena-style game I've played.

not so great now, but it's a great example of old skool fun on a now 'not next gen' system....
still, if you like the series, it's a must play.... AND, the endings ARE AWESOME!.... there are MULTIPLE ENDINGS, too....

A MUST HAVE,

This game is very dark none-the-less, but let's just put it this way. After Twisted Metal 1 and 2 (even though it was cartoon-ish graphics-wise) the games have and are still dark games. Then Twisted Metal's 3 and 4 came out (by sony '989') and not the original creators of this series. That happening resulted in Twisted Metal being more 'light' taking away the darkness out of the characters (hence Hammerhead the hardcore monster truck (from pt. 1 and the huge van from pt. 2) turned into a frickin' granny who becomes the driver lmao. They also made Twisted Metal 3 and 4'family friendly' which is cool because I really did enjoy those games a little bit. But once Twisted Metal Black hit stores? oooohhh my lord I lost my mind knowing the creators got a hold of their creation once again, and this game's level designs and characters are very much evident that the creators stuck to their roots.
I currently got my hands on Twisted Metal's 1, 3 and Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition. I've ordered Twisted Metal 2 (from here) and should be getting it soon, and after that comes I'll be getting this game again. I advice you to get it, don't buy it used either, get it new so that you can cherish the value of the disc. Twitter: @RizzLyricist
