Editorial Reviews

Review

Estrin is an amazing harmonica player, a soulful lead vocalist and a brilliant original songwriter. Estrin's harmonica sings alongside blues tunes that entertain audiences like no other in the genre. -- San Francisco Chronicle

Rick Estrin sings and writes songs like the brightest wiseguy in all bluesland and blows harmonica as if he learned at the knee of Little Walter. -- DownBeat

Rollicking and raucous, super-cool and hip...saritical, sharp lyrics and killer solos. It just doesn't get any better than this. -- Blues Revue

These are serious musicians out to have a hotter than hot good time. It's tough to stay in your seat when Estrin and his musical cohorts get cooking. -- Chicago Sun-Times

Product Description

Brilliant songwriter, world-class harmonica player and streetwise vocalist Rick Estrin was the very popular front man with the internationally renowned Little Charlie & The Nightcats for over 30 years. They played thousands of club, theatre and festival gigs across the U.S. and around the world. Plus, Rick wrote the vast majority of the songs (including the Blues Music Award-winner "My Next Ex-Wife") on their nine critically acclaimed albums. Little Charlie & The Nightcats have over 115,000 career scans, with their first three releases pre-dating SoundScan. With the retirement of Little Charlie Baty, Estrin has recruited guitar whiz Kid Andersen and kept on creating and playing the smartest, hippest blues and roots music around. TWISTED highlights Rick Estrin's offbeat, yet razor-sharp lyrical visions backed by a more visceral, rock-infused guitar punch than before. Front and center throughout are Estrin's wry, cutting vocals and amazing harmonica chops. Andersen's killer fretwork stands out as well and a rock solid rhythm section keeps things tight and right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Estrin is the BEST October 11, 2009
Format:MP3 Music
Rick Estrin shines again with his clever songwriting and unique personality imprinted all over this cd. There was never any doubt that rick was the genius behind his nightcats band with little charlie baty on guitar. Little Charlie is a virtuoso on guitar but it was always rick etsrins wit, humor, intelligence, class and sheer charisma that sold the show night after night. On Twisted, Rick is still in the rare form that makes him a true original; He sings and croons and plays the harmonica like a seasoned and tasteful pro. He makes you actually want more harp because he is a genius at when to lay out and when to pour it on. I highly recommend this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!! September 30, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan of Little Charlie & the Nightcats for a long time now and have seen them live a number of times. When I heard that Little Charlie Baty had chosen to no longer tour, I was very disappointed that I would no longer get to hear or see Little Charlie & the Nightcats perform anymore. A couple of months later I was thrilled to hear that Rick Estrin, harmonica player, lead singer and founding member with Charlie Baty of the band had decided to continue touring under the name Rick Estrin and the Nightcats. I saw them live a couple of days ago and they are just as good as they have ever been. J. Hansen on drums and Lorenzo Farrell on bass are still doing a great job and Kid Andersen is a worthy successor to the guitar spot formerly held by Little Charlie. The songs are as good or better as always. If you haven't bought this CD, do it now and if you have an opportunity to see them live, go see them, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Tears it Up! August 10, 2010
Format:Audio CD
This is Rick Estrin's first Alligator release with his own Nightcats, following the retirement of Little Charlie Baty from touring in 2008. It is a terrific performance - full of sharp harmonica playing and great singing on a batch of excellent new songs. Rick's in top form here, especially on "P.A. Slim is Back" and the knock-out, Little Walter-inspired instrumental "Take it Slow." Kid Anderson on guitar is no slouch, and following in the footsteps of Little Charlie ain't easy. Make no mistake about it: Rick Estrin is one of the premier blues musicians of this generation. A sensational showman, award-winning songwriter, and harmonica virtuoso, Estrin has put his indelible stamp on "Twisted" for all his fans to enjoy. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick at his best September 21, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I believe this is Rick's first outing as a Nightcat sans Charlie Baty. I miss Little Charlie, consummate guitarist that he is, but Kid Andersen is a fabulous addition to this band. As usual, Rick will slay you with his harp and lyrics . . . . both razor-sharp. All the cuts are great . . . . no disappointments here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Star Rick February 2, 2013
By Don Mac
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
another sweet album by Rick. The man is pure showmanship all the way. Man can he play that Harp Last year he came to Florida for a one night gig in Tallahassee and I missed it. So I'll be watching in 2013 for his return.
