Book Description

January 7, 2000
Twisted Roots of Evil details the authors journey from her abusive upbringing in the rural south to survival at the turn of the millennium. As a child, Susan Kesegich and her sisters suffered extreme neglect, sexual, mental and physical abuse. Their father raped them and they watched him tie their mother to a tree, light a fire beneath her, and shoot at her. Marrying at the tender age of fourteen to escape the horror, Susan found herself in a marriage that rivaled her mothers for physical abuse. Six years later, she, too, was divorced, poor, uneducated, and lost. Although her life changed when she met her current husband, it was through the victimization of her father's second family that she ultimately found closure. With the help of Susan, her father was sentenced to life in prison for the abuse he committed against his second family.

This is a story that is heart wrenching but at the same time uplifting. This is a story that needed to be told. It details Susan's remarkable journey that captures the essence of survival in a dynamic, contemporary world. It tells everyone you can start out in this world with everything stacked against you but with pride, determination, and perseverance you can make a difference.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I received your book yesterday. I stayed up till the wee hours and finished it this morning. "Twisted Roots" should be in every facility for abused women and children. It should also be required reading for those men doing time for these crimes. When I think of the petty things I complained about twenty years ago, not realizing the hell you were experiencing at the same time, I feel ashamed. Thank you for writing this book and opening my eyes. -- Doreen Sandt

I wanted you to know that I received your book late on Friday. I read it over the weekend. It was a real page turner and I honestly found it hard to put down. Although all of us (survivors) have a slightly different "angle" to contend with, so much of what you shared I could relate too! I have even adopted the song "I can see clearly now..." I also found your poetry very appropriate for the text of the book. -- Holli Marshall - Chairperson for the "Mint Green Ribbon for the Awareness of Abuse" drive.

From the Author

Being born into a poor, rural family that often went without food, electricity, and plumbing is not a crime. There are many hard working, proud people in this country that are not wealthy. But to suffer the abuse I did while growing up is a crime. I wrote my book so other victims will know they can survive this and still live a normal life. As children we may learn what we live. But it does not mean we have to live what we learn. I also want people to know they have someone they can turn to. Someone who has been down the road they are going down. Growing up I wanted a father I could run to if someone was hurting me. But what are you supposed to do when it's your father doing the hurting? I hope Twisted Roots of Evil opens the eyes of every person who reads it to the problem of child abuse and to finding ways to combat it. For my own small part, in addition to my speaking engagements and talking to groups and victims, I donate 10% from the sale of each book to a different children's charity every month.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid, candid, shocking -- a clarion call to action!, June 5, 2000
This review is from: Twisted Roots of Evil (Hardcover)
An abuse and incest victim as a child, Susan Kesegich struggledto understand how it could happen to herself and her sisters. Borninto a poor, rural family that often went without food, electricity and plumbing, Kesegich and her four siblings suffered extreme neglect, sexual, mental, and physical abuse with intervention by responsible adults, school, church or community agencies. Kesegich was eventually able to understand her childhood traumas and work to help other women and children through volunteer efforts at a local child abuse center and become trained as a special court appointed advocate for children. Twisted Roots Of Evil is vivid, candid, shocking, and a highly recommended testament to conditions that still persist in all too many areas of the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book..., July 27, 2005
This review is from: Twisted Roots of Evil (Hardcover)
After I picked this book up and started reading it I couldnt put it down. The author is so vivid in her writing that it keeps you pinned to your seat. While reading the book its as though you can feel the fear that these children lived with on a day to day basis. This book sums up just how cruel some child abuse cases can really be.
