This review is from: A Twisted Tale of Karma (Paperback)
As the story opens up Myra is buried alive in her own skin dreadfully trying to put things together in her mind, but she's unable to.
Back...back...back...and forth... Myra Tranece Danford once extremely pampered by her parents. That would all cease to exist. Myra's mother would slowly dwindle into a drug addict causing her to neglect, and exploit her. The pure act of kindness from neighbors would help Myra. Throughout all of the sadness Myra would maintain her GPA, and as a result she'd get a full scholarship to St. John. Myra had dreamt of having "The American Dream", earning a degree, career, and a beautiful house. Attaining it all because she'd worked hard, and not waiting on some man, unfortunately she saw first hand what the results of that would be. Milton Roberts was the bum kid in the projects who got beat for any and everything. He lived with his grandmother Bertha, who openly resented everything about him. An early run in with crime determined that Milton wasn't cut for that caliber of employment. Having to endure ongoing cruelty all of the rage, hate and anger he utilized on the field. With determination to escape his life, he earned a full scholarship to St. John to play football. Although St. John wasn't known as a football school, Milton made it the exception. It's a hard knock life for us.... Myra wasn't searching for a guy, she didn't want to loose her self and wind up like her mother. Milton definitely wasn't looking to be involved; women were all ungrateful and stupid. Oddly enough they both found commonality in the other. Born in the same month, mothers abandoned them, determined to make it, along with haunting nightmares and secrets that neither want to surface. With deep dark secrets, horrific nightmares, nights out and blackmail looming over them, Milton is prepared to save his career and future at ALL cost. With his behavior becoming more erratic, he tries to get a handle on his demons. Myra being affection starved has a low sense of self-worth which makes her easy prey for Milton. Is Myra built to last, or will she undoubtedly become the weakest link? My gi-rlfriend is there through thick and thin, my gi-rlfriend is down for anything, my gi-rl friend...we should all be so lucky to have a "Quanda" to share our lives with. Amaleka G. McCall sets it right off! This is a very electrifying street tale that will have you zigzagging between the past and present with your fingers anxiously waiting to get to the next page. Buttersweet revenge!

"A Twisted Tale of Karma" is the best book I've read all year!! Amaleka McCall did her thing on this one!!! I could not put this book down it was absolutely addictive. Milton was such a bastard I wanted to kill him myself! But, he was only so damn hateful b/c of his evil Grandmother, and perverted cousin who molested him. The way he did Myra was so wrong, I'm glad he got what was coming to him, and that Quanda lived!! Knowledge got his too. Karma can be a beautiful thing. This would make a damn good movie, I'd surely go and see it.

What goes around comes around,
By Black Butterfly Review (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Twisted Tale of Karma (Paperback)
Myra Danford born a child of circumstance grew up in a house of neglect and abuse. Her father abandoned her mother Vidal when Myra was very young and she turned to drugs for comfort shortly thereafter. At the age of ten she was forced to turn tricks to support her mother's drug habits. With the love and caring of her best friend Quanda, Myra persevered and graduated from high school at the head of her class while earning a full four year scholarship to St. Johns University.
While in college, a very naive Myra meets future NFL prospect Milton Roberts and falls hard for him. Milton promises Myra the world and the dream of being a wealthy wife of an NFL player. However, Milton a victim of child molestation has his own painful childhood memories that still haunt him. With his draft status on the line, Milton is being blackmailed with a terrible secret. Milton's life quickly takes a turn for the worst and he ends up using Myra for his own cunning reasons and Myra unknowingly is along for the ride. Before long, Milton's secret is exposed and Myra finds herself in a web of deceit, betrayal and murder. A Twisted Tale of Karma, the debut novel of Ms. Amaleka McCall, is the best book I've read this year. It teaches the true meaning of karma "what goes around comes around". The storylines were real and very well put together. Ms. McCall touched on the harsh realities of neglect and child abuse. This book was definitely a page turner and will have you on the edge of your seat anticipating what is going to happen next. Ms. McCall is an outstanding storyteller/writer and I look forward to possibly a sequel and hopes of reading more books by her in the very near future. A Twisted Tale of Karma,
This review is from: A Twisted Tale of Karma (Paperback)
The main character Myra draws you in from the jump - cause she is thee "drama queen". Amaleka G. McCall wove an incredible story that made me feel like I was on a roller coaster in the dark (never knowing where the twists & turns are coming or when it's gonna just drop). I didn't want to get off & I can't wait to read her next book. Look out for McCall "Princess of Urban Fiction", she is the TRUTH. I could see this story on the big screen.
This fast paced Urban tale features suspense, dysfunctional love, scandalous sex(I mean SCANDALOUS),murder, mayhem & of course KARMA. CAUTION: You may deprive yourself of sleep and get to work late; like I did. This book is impossible to put down. You've been warned.

Karma Comes Full Circle,

Myra Danforth is looking for the cloud with a silver lining and she thinks she may have found it. Growing up Myra had seen and done more than many adults as the only child of an addict that was willing to do anything for that next hit. When she's accepted to St. John's University, she feels that is her ticket to happiness.
Milton Roberts too has experienced some things no child (or adult) should. He was raised in a house full of mistreatment and disdain. The prospect of being picked up in the NFL draft is all he has to hold on to. Two shattered souls. Two victims of abuse. Two aching hearts. One ulterior motive. One has taken all the hard knocks and only wants to be loved at any cost, while the other had bottled up those feelings and has a hardened heart and soul. Can karma rectify their situations? A new voice in urban fiction has arisen. Amaleka artfully contrives a gritty tale of karma that keeps readers on edge until the end. I have to say Quanda, Myra's best friend, was my favorite character. Would love to read a full novel about her. Hint...hint...hint. Reviewed by: Toni

I wish I had more hands, so I could give this book 4 Thumbs Up !!! This book is well written and Ms. McCall uses great wordplay, familiar surroundings and ingenious imagery to depict the harsh life of young Myra, but in the end...What goes around comes around for all who do Myra wrong. This can definitely be portayed in Cinematic form, I can see it now !!!
I picked this book up at the Harlem Book Fair and could not put it down ! I love the way she navigates from past to present and ties them all in so eloquently, an absolute work of art. ! I wish more young writers would learn to perfect their craft, like the author here did. Kudos to the new literary diva !!!

I had the opportunity to read this book and could not put it down. As a reader, you immediately developed a strong connection with the various characters. You feel sorry for Myra and her hard life, you feel bitter hate for Milton and you love Quanda because she is the ultimate friend. This is a classic urban story with lots of twists. Two thumbs up.

Myra had a lot of obstacles to overcome at a very young age. To begin with she has to deal with the abandonment of her father and her mother being addicted to drugs. As if things couldn't get any worse she is sent to live with her grandmother after her mother's death. This makes Myra's life more difficult.
Despite all of her personal obstacles Myra still has the desire to do better and she does. Myra graduates at the top of her class and receives a full scholarship. It seeems as if things are looking up until she meets a guy named Milton. Myra's life takes a downward turn quickly. Milton is only interested in keeping Milton happy no matter how much it destroys Myra. Despite all of the changes in her life Myra has one constant and that is her best friend Quanda. Qunada will go to any length to protect Myra. The book has the perfect word in the title and that is "KARMA" because what goes around comes back around. This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I haven't written a review in almost two years but I feel I would have done this book an injustice if I didn't write one. Buy it you will not be disappointed. |
