Micaela creates Magic and Havoc in this fun, spooky book...., October 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Twisted Taurus (Zodiac Chillers) (Paperback)
Micaela is a mysterious outsider at school. Darcy is the new girl looking for a friend. Micaela seeks out the lonely girl after having a vision of her. Darcy is in awe of the beautiful and sophisticated Micaela. But Micaela is a powerful witch working on the darkside and a possessive Taurus who will do anything to capture Darcy's brother even if it means bringing Darcy over to the darkside...or commiting a horrific crime..
This is a great book. Micaela is a fascinating character to watch, albeit scary. She's like a white tiger, interesting to watch behind the safety of bars but scary up close. This twisted Taurus makes this book a fun ride. I also recommend Piecies Drowning by same author.

"The dead girl stumbled toward them...then Darci screamed as if screaming could somehow wake her from this living nightmare.", February 12, 2010
This review is from: Twisted Taurus (Zodiac Chillers) (Paperback)
With "Twisted Taurus" the fourth book in the Zodiac Chiller series for young adults, the author of the books changed from Carol Ellis to Ellen Steiber. This series used the Zodiac as the gimmick to drive all of the novels in this series. Each of these novels were stand-alone books that had no continuing characters or settings, so the books could be read in any, or no order, and it seems to have been one of the better series out there for the time. In the novels in this series we are constantly told that people behave as they do because of their astrological signs. Whatever, you don't have to believe in astrology to enjoy these novels.
The novels also got progressively darker as the series progressed. And if
In Leo's Lair (Zodiac Chillers) by Carol Ellis was dark, then "Twisted Taurus" is almost virtually black in tone. Micaela James has made a decision, she wants a friend, and what Micaela wants, she gets. Unfortunately, Micaela doesn't have a clue as what having a friend means; she just wants one. She is a manipulative, vengeful, and cold little b*tch who has no trouble hurting those around her, or experimenting with poisons on her companions, just to see what happens. Micaela also considers herself to be a witch, and she hears voices. This all equals a bad combination by any stretch.
In her pursuit of her goals she performs black magic rituals and cultivates toxic plants from her secret garden to get various poisons to use in her rituals. As the novel starts, she in creating a new poison from one of these plants she calls the Heart of Darkness.
On her quest to find some friends, Micaela decides that she wants the Callahan kids, who are new to the neighborhood, to be hers. She wants Kurt to be her lover, and Darci to be her BFF/protégé, and she doesn't care who gets hurt, or killed, in the process. Unfortunately, the Callahan's are taken, and Micaela isn't into sharing. Kurt is in love with the beautiful Kristin Harper, and Darci is taking an interest in Ian Hassler. Deciding to get rid of her competition for the sibling's attention, Micaela at first tries to be their friends, and this works with Darci, who, being new to the area, is looking for a friend. It doesn't work for Kurt, who isn't looking for a new girlfriend, he has one, and he's happy with her.
Too bad for Kristin. But, a little obstacle like Kristin isn't going to stop Micaela however, and at first she tries some nasty subterfuge, but when that doesn't work, she decides to take drastic action. Meanwhile, Darci is still falling in love with Ian, and Micaela just can't have that either, and decides that her new poison is just the trick to take care of this problem.
Now it may seem that I'm giving everything away, but I'm not, there are a couple of major twists here that show just what a little psycho Micaela is. Kinda like Temperance Brennan (from
Bones: The Complete First Season) but having gone very, very wrong. "Twisted Taurus" also has some borderline supernatural stuff in it. Do the spells that Micaela use actually work, or is it just coincidence? Is she in communication with the devil, or is she just hearing voices? Read the novel and make up your own mind, but clearly Micaela's trolley has gone off its tracks and Micaela's dangerous. Like the previous book in this series, this novel could have been longer, and it just ENDS a little too sharply. A longer book would have been great.
After 1999 Steiber stopped publishing, at least under her own name, except for a cool looking book called
A Rumor of Gems (Gemstone) in 2005. Except for the too quick ending, this is a great read with a great villain, and the next book in the series would be
Never Love a Libra (Zodiac Chillers) by Vicki Kamida.
For this site I have reviewed these other books in this series:
In Leo's Lair (Zodiac Chillers)
Never Love a Libra (Zodiac Chillers)
Pisces Drowning (Zodiac Chillers)
Rage of Aquarius (Zodiac Chillers)
The Scorpio Society (Zodiac Chillers)
