5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful score with a twist
After his tremendous success with "Speed", Mark Mancina returns scoring another Jan De Bont film, "Twister", which is by far a better score. 3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe 3 and a half
I agree that this is a very good score, and deserves more than three stars. But four? I don't think it's quite at that platau. The main theme (Tracks #1 and the beginning of #18 are really pretty, and a lot of the other music captures the granduer of the twisters as well. It moves along very nicely, and is upbeat, without being mood music. A soundtrack definitely...

After his tremendous success with "Speed", Mark Mancina returns scoring another Jan De Bont film, "Twister", which is by far a better score. Here, Mancina unleashes sheer orchestral power and excellent thematic material that really sounds good both in the film and on CD. "Wheatfield" opens with conductor, Don Harper's voice telling the orchestra to quiet down as they get set to perform the music (turn up the volume to hear what he's saying). Then, you better turn it down quick because the volume is really loud. The main theme then comes with lots of strings, with hard hitting low brass and racing percussion. "Futility" contains an excellent rendition of the main theme played on strings. "Downdraft" features propulsive string rhythms and screeching clarinets. The impressive LA Master Chorale shines in tracks such as "The Big Suck", "Ditch", "Bob's Road", "We're Almost There", and "God's Finger" to aid in the devastation of the destructive tornado. "Going Green" contains powerful rhythmic strings along with a wailing electric guitar. One disappointment about this score is "William Tell Overture/Oklahoma Medley", which in my opinion, is distracting from the score and doesn't belong. Mancina actually didn't want this either, as he had written a big orchestral ending for the film, but director Jan De Bont didn't like the idea and instead, went with the other. "End Title/Respect the Wind" finishes off the score with one final rendition of the main theme, which segues into a nicely done instrumental piece by Edward and Alex Van Halen. If you want knockout action music with solid thematic material, then this score is definitely for you. Pick it up if you can find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific soundtrack!, September 25, 2003

This review is from: Twister: Motion Picture Score (Audio CD)
I liked this CD from the first song. Mark Mancina did an excellent job of composing these songs. Twister is a naturally high-adrenaline movie, and Mark Mancina did well to add to that adrenaline rush. It's an excellent soundtrack and I enjoy it thoroughly each time I listen to it.

This is one of the best soundtracks made in recent years. It adds so much to the film! I get chills when I hear it, and when that happens, its good, damn good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Piece of Work, December 5, 1999

As a die-hard John Williams fan I have in the past found it hard to listen to anything besides his work. But in this case I made an exception. Mark Mancina did a terrific job of portraying the feeling of the wrath of the weather turned for the worse in this score. When you listen to the sound of track number seven, "Going Green", you can almost taste the excitement of going into the very finger of God to try and second guess him. I highly recommend this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars An awesome twist in movie music., April 22, 2001

Mark Mancina isn 't the most active of film composers, and if you had to choose a bracket for him, it would be the Hans Zimmer-Trevor Rabin-Nick Glennie Smith bracket; ie pounding action themes and grandiose orchestral swoops. With Twister, he creates a niche more his own with it's mix of choral, orchestral and rock elements. Certainly, the most spectacular of these is "Cow", which combines a ethereal choral section with a very ominous electric guitar and string section. Also worthy of special mention, Downdraft works with escalating, shimmering violins, ending in thunderous horns and drums. Much of the score works to similar effect, creating moods of excitement, imminent threat and wonder, which perfectly reflects the film's visuals of dark skies filled with havoc and malice. The CD itself suffers from being arranged out of sequence and resultedly lacks continuity from track to track, but, overall, an unusual score for one of cinema's most visually exotic action movies.

Beautifully written, spirit-defining music which truly captures the awesome and deadly beauty of tornadoes and the over all mood. This music is definitely worth $16, but if you buy it here, it will be cheaper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost on par with Jurassic Park., February 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The CD itself has one or two songs missing from the movie. But the rest of them are here and accounted for. I enjoyed the movie so much I bought the score that should say how good it is. Following along with the movie you'll know what songs are matched with what scenes and they can be very dramatic or have just the right sound for that part.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twister [Original Score] Pros/Cons, April 6, 2008
This review is from: Twister: Motion Picture Score (Audio CD)
The original score to this movie is the best. I've listed some pros and cons about this CD:

PROS:
The CD features the ORCHESTRATED music rather than the music from the other soundtrack
The CD contains fast paced chasing tornado sequences (The Hunt: Cow, F5: Mobile Home)
Most of the tracks on here are used in the movie and most of them aren't
Features great orchestrated tracks

CONS:
Most of the tracks I found on here often repeat, such as: The Hunt: Cow and part of F5: Mobile Home, It's Coming: The Big Suck and F5: God's Finger...
Somehow I feel there are still some tracks missing from the score
I felt that the track "Oklahoma Medley" wasn't needed on the score but it was nice to hear at least one piece of dialogue...
I felt that most of the score should've contained a little bit of dialogue like on the track "Oklahoma: Downdraft" that felt like it should've contained a bit of dialogue

I rate this soundtrack a 8/10 it was nice to finally release the score for the film.
This score is worth purchasing and worth listening :)
