Let me be frank - this is an awesome read, but one which will unsettle you. If you like Borges, or Bulgakov, then you'll love these eight short stories written by first-time published author Clare Le May. She's a very modern writer, and very accessible, writing about events we can all relate to - but couched in a reality which becomes more and more magical the more you read. She writes from a very female perspective, but that doesn't make this a "women's book" - the themes here are eternal, and Le May's insights quite unique. There are ghosts in this book, and gremlins, and anxieties we're all prey to which will stay with you a long time after reading.

But it's wrong to call this book "dark" - it isn't. It's like a fable, or a fairy-story, with modern-day witches and bogey-men and twisted labyrinths where you can get lost. If you like magical realism, then you'll definitely find this worth a read.

"Twisting Tales" is a slim volume - 80 pages or so - with eight first-class short stories, perfect for a read when you've an hour or two to yourself.

Pick this book up if you want something to get you thinking. Her command of language seems effortless, and yet there's not a word out of place.

A modern-day Grimms' Fairytales for grown-ups. Highly recommended.
