I expect 'Two Actresses', alternately titled 'Two Stage Sisters', will mostly appeal to students of Chinese film. As described in China on Screen: Cinema and Nation (Film and Culture Series):

"Xie Fang plays a child bride who is on the run from an arranged marriage and takes refuge with a traveling opera troupe. She becomes close to the troupe manager's daughter, and the two stage sisters perform duets together. When they grow up, they move to Shanghai and become stars. Xie's character, Chunhua, is drawn to left-wing politics under the tutelage of a woman journalist who is a Party member. However, her sister Yuehong is lured by promises of luxury to become her Shanghai manager's concubine. After the revolution, Yuehong sees the error of her ways, and the two sisters are reunited...The representation of the Party authority figure by a woman is an unusual feature of 'Two Stage Sisters'. While it is not unusual for women to perform as the apprentice characters in Chinese revolutionary cinema, the Party authority figures that guide them are usually male."

Although the quality of the film was rather poor (it apparently has not been digitally restored) and the subtitles at times moved fast and utilized words that were inconsistent with the dialogue, 'Two Stage Sisters' had been a high quality production in its day and was interesting in the context of how Chinese film evolved since its beginnings. What I found particularly interesting was how the performances in the film changed as Chunhua was drawn more and more to left-wing politics.

This film might seem a little crude by today's technical standards, but the quality acting ensures that it will last and have a place in film history.

I will have to admit, I did not think this film was the cream of the crop. The subtitles are stilted, in some places missing entirely. The film quality is poor. The story plot, while interesting, was in parts unlikely and had problems of internal inconsistency. The Communist overtones are so strong that in some places, though the acting is otherwise excellent, the political views become visibly scripted. However, from a historical perspective, it shows its worth. Two Actresses is the remade version of the film called (also in translation) Stage Sisters. From these two films (Stage Sisters is on YouTube), which are nearly the same but with different endings, one can see two different points in Chinese political thought and corresponding censorship that is difficult to otherwise express. Stage Sisters was barely shown before its removal by censorship, whereas Two Actresses was popular, a difference visible in the quality of the film stock - the more popular one has suffered more deterioration. If it were not for Amazon, I would never have seen the newer, remade copy of the film, and so, for historical interest and film analysis purposes, I give it five stars.

I thought this movie would be about the life of hard working people. In fact, this movie was about promoting communism. Very disappointing and a waste of time!!!! Shaw Brothers movies are much better!!!!

I would not recommend this movie to anyone.
