When the Calling first released "Wherever You Will Go", it took a few months before the mainstream hooked on to it, and then eventually it became so popular that it stayed in the top 40 for over a full year. But subsequent singles weren't up to par, and then it seemed like the band dropped off the face of the Earth (unless you count Alex Band's substitution for Chad Kroeger in Santana's "Why Don't You & I"). But now the band came back with Two, which is titled as such because of one of the following reasons: 1) it's the band's second album, 2) the band has been cut down to only two members, or 3) only two people own this album.
All jokes aside, I looked at the other reviews on here, and the reviewers are completely split down the middle; people either say the album is terrible or remarkable. So I guess it looks like I'm playing neutral when I say that the album is just okay. The album starts out GREAT, though, with tracks like "One By One" and the leadoff single, "Our Lives". And the romantic "Chasing the Sun" may look a little corny on paper, but to hear it is to enjoy it. It's too bad that that formula doesn't work as well with the other love-oriented songs. "If Only" is okay, but "Anything" could stand a rewrite; and sorry, but "Surrender" is cheesier than a Savage Garden song. And there's also the obligatory end-of-album keep-your-head-up song, "Your Hope", that really doesn't come off more than tolerable. While the Calling didn't really break any new ground with this record, it's still an above-average album, so if you like light rock, feel free to give it a spin. Anthony Rupert

"Two" Good To Be True,
By Stephanie (New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Two (Audio CD)
Wow. Amazing. I've been a fan of the group since I heard Alex Band (the lead vocalist) sing the song "Why Don't You and I". I immediately went and bought "Camino Palmero" (CP). CP was an awesome album and for this one I was expecting something similar. They are incomparable. Both are amazing albums, but they are totally different. Two has a harder edge too it and definately shows the guys maturity. They've grown into men, and it shows. 1. One by One - (5/5) - Once again they started the CD off with a bang. Sounds like a hard rock song, and it's one of my favorites. It has a beautiful message and Alex's voice shows so much emotion. Really an awesome song. The lyrics are excellent, the vocals excellent, and the music great. 2. Our Lives - (4/5) - Basically the equivalent of "Wherever You Will Go" from their previous album. It is a song about how you must take the time and days you have now and live them to their fullest. Great graduation song. 3. Things Will Go My Way - (5/5) - Another flawless song. Shows depth and emotion that is a rarity in music today. 4. Chasing the Sun - (3/5) - A fun love song. A great song on its own, but when compared to how wonderful the rest of the album is, it isn't one of my favorites. 5. Believing - (5/5) - A wonderful inspirational song. Basically says to never stop believing in yourself because you have the power to do anything. 6. Anything - (4/5) - A superb love anthem. They sing about being completely in love that you would do anything to make the other person happy. 7. If Only - (5/5) - Another one of my favorites. It has a great beat and Alex's vocals are haunting. It talks about how he wishes true love could find everyong. 8. Somebody Out There - (10/5) - My personal favorite because it holds special meaning for me. This is one of the harder songs and is about a girl who wonders if there is a God. It is not a preachy song but just asks "If there is someone out there, to make things wrong, and to make things right". This song captures my feeligns on religion perfectly. Excellent song. 9. Surrender (5/5) - A fun song, but very sexual. Alex sings about the love of his life and what they share together. It once again makes you feel what others feel when they are in love. 10. Dreaming in Red - (4/5) - A fun song. Great beats. 11. Your Hope - (5/5) - This took a few listens to get used to. It kinda has a matrix feel to it, but the meaning is awesome. Basically it says to believe in yourself and never give up hope. Overall, these songs have great lyrics and beats and show the boy's maturity. I think it is just as good as their first album, if not better. The thing that makes them stand out is the emotion. Without listening to the lyrics you can feel them through Alex's voice. It's awesome and I've never seen it in another band before. Bravo, boys. This is rare talent. Buy the album, you should enjoy it.

The new Cd from The Calling does not disappoint die hard fans and will draw in many new fans. The boys have grown up but have not lost their sincerity or raw musical talent. This CD is a must have for anyone who appreciates great music, beautiful vocals and meaningful lyrics. The best songs on the CD are "Anything", "Things Will Go My Way" and "Somebody Out There". All the songs have their own unique style and the lyrics are deeply woven. This is one of those rare CDs that you cannot skip over any tracks. You won't tire of this CD anytime soon. Great Job ~ The Calling!

Second Time Around...,

Two is an amazing cd....even better than Camino Palmero. The guys and their songs have matured so much with deeper meanings in the lyrics that make you think more. Their music is inspirational to some, provides hope to those who feel lost, and some beautiful lyrics and music to anyone willing to listen. Each song is unique, which is refreshing considering some artists whose songs all sound the same. Since the subjects of the music vary, so do the actual songs. Some are uplifting, catchy, erotic, rockin, passionate, beautiful, and narrative, etc. My personal favorites are "Somebody Out There" and "Surrender". Overall I'll compare the songs...1) ONE BY ONE- a definite favorite that will get stuck in your head. Alex sings very passionately and the music shines through forcefully so you remember it. 2) OUR LIVES- It reminds me or Wherever you will go, not because of the sound of the song, but because I think people will be able to easily relate to it. It's the first single, and because it is so beautifully written and catchy (like Wherever you will go) it's a an easy favorite that will draw people in to buying the cd. You won't be disappointed! 3) THINGS WILL GO MY WAY- It starts off very slow and gradually speeds up when Alex begins to sing. The lyrics are beautiful and uplifting. 4) CHASING THE SUN- I love this song! It's so amazing how Alex compares the sun (nature) to who he is singing about with so much passion. 5) BELIEVING- a very emotionally charged song with an even bigger message. For those who need inspiration, listen up! 6) ANYTHING- It sounds predictable at first, but the way Alex sings the song shows how deep he really feels. The instruments in the song are beautifully played. 7) IF ONLY- This song has some of the best lyrics on the whole cd. It might not be as catchy as some of the others at first, but it's definitely worth the listen. 8) SOMEBODY OUT THERE- My absolute favorite! It begins with Alex placing a scene in your mind, so you understand where the song is coming from. It's not like anything of their songs before, but I guess that's why I love it. It's so refreshing to hear, and has a very hopeful message. 9) SURRENDER- Perhaps the most passionate song on the cd! Yes it's detailed and erotic, but it's done is such a beautiful way. I can tell the way he says the words, he's giving you the idea of what he's saying, but you put actually put the picture in your mind. It's not vulgar or graphic, but is very beautiful, as is the actual song. 10) DREAMING IN RED- It has a beautiful melody that's hard to forget. Actually it's hard to describe either, so go listen and figure out what it means to you! 11) YOUR HOPE- Very poetic and hopeful for anyone who needs it. The words of Aaron provide an extra little personal touch to the beautiful song and message. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard their second cd. So often I've gotten the second cd from artists and it has been so bad compared to their first one. That's not the case here, because they have matured so much and the music has such a bigger meaning. Oh and let's not forget that it's an enhanced cd with music videos, etc! Anyway you've heard what I think of the cd, but you'll never really know how good it is unless you go out and buy it yourself. So happy shopping to you! :)

Two is incredible! Aaron and Alex did it again! All the songs are amazing! Itz 10 times as good as Camino Palmero, which I thought couldn't be beat. The songs have so much meaning to them, and Alex's voice just expresses the meanings soooo well. Aaron's guitar licks are sweet! I keep finding myself humming to them thoughout the day.I think EVERYONE should pick up a copy of this album! It is sooo worth your money!

Great Sophmore CD,

(I'd technically give this CD 4 and a half stars.) I picked up Camino Palmero the first time I saw The Calling at a concert in Washington state. I instantly fell in love and was so excited when they announced their second album, Two, coming out. To begin this CD- One by One is an extremely beautiful song, and a great opener to this, especially for fans of Unstoppable. The CD continues with their hit, Our Lives and the songs continue to remain beautiful. Hold On rivals Stigmatized, and some of the songs are obviously more evolved and the CD remains a beautiful reminder of their talent. Songs of love and Alex's high notes are abundant, and the lyrics this time around question more than their freshman debut. Two is deffinitely worth the money and the Calling remains one of the best underated bands out there today.

If you like The Calling's first CD you are sure to love their latest! It demonstrates how the band has grown musically. My favorite song on this CD is "Our Lives" I think that is a song that a lot of people can connect with. I would recommend this as a cd that you can listen to anytime. It doesn't matter what mood you are in, you'll find this to be an excellent Cd to listen to.

Better than Camino Palmero,
By Brianna Baxter "Bri" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Two (Audio CD)
I am a huge fan of The Calling. I found this album to be much more uplifting and meaningful than Camino Palmero. Camino Palmero was written during the artist's teen years and you can certainly see how much they have matured in the album Two. Each song on Two is very different than those on Camino Palmero. The lyrics are deeper and are not full of teen angst. I believe Two will gain the Calling an older and perhaps more diverse fanbase.
Somebody Out There, Believing, and Your Hope are songs that you can listen to when you are feeling down, and they can be almost therapeutic. Things Will Go My Way is perfect for when well when things don't go your way. If Only is for when love isn't going the way you planned. Chasing the Sun and Anything are the songs to listen to when you are in love. Surrender (it is a good song) is very sexually charged and does seem a little out of place. Dreaming In Red is a song about escaping. One by One is good but a little odd. Our Lives is catchy and it is so true that we have to make the best out of our lives....For a Sophomore album (which is sometimes not as good as the first) I think that The Calling created a wonderful new sound. I also believe that an album with uplifting lyrics is so needed in the world we live in today. Buy Two and Enjoy! |
