Editorial Reviews

Review

Two Cities, Two Loves calls us back to Augustine, the great Christian leader and theologian who witnessed the fall of the Roman Empire at the hands of the barbarians. In response to this dramatic event, Augustine wrote his great masterpiece, "The City of God". There he argued that history is the working out of one great universal principle, that there are two rival cities formed by two loves. The earthly city, formed by love of self even to the contempt of God, stands in contrast with the heavenly city, the city of God, founded and shaped by love of God even to the contempt of self. These two cities are progressing along separate paths toward radically different ends. Yet members of God's city are nevertheless in the world and need to conduct themselves as a renewing force within it. Two Cities, Two Loves is a contemporary restatement of the themes sounded originally in Augustine's City of God. Deeply biblical in its argument, thoroughly conversant with contemporary culture and practically informed by personal involvement in urban ministry, Two Cities, Two Loves is a book for our times. It awakens Christians to their identity within society and their eternal destiny, and it instructs them in the one right things to do: "Be God's people in the midst of this world's culture". -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Intuitive, compelling, relevant and applicable, May 20, 1999

This review is from: Two Cities, Two Loves: Christian Responsibility in a Crumbling Culture (Hardcover)
Dr. Boice's "Two Cities, Two Loves" intuitively hilights how Christians can influence the society in which they live by recognizing and lovingly addressing the candid realities of the society in which they live. Dr. Boice uncovers compelling evidence which reveals many shortcomings of the church at large and discusses relevant Scriptural truths which are necessary for every person who calls themselves "Christian" to embrace. He binds everything together with applicable exhortations to "pick up the torch" of genuine Christian living in a secular society. The point? To make America, town by town, a better place to live through living virtously, drawing people to inquire about the God we serve.
