Mia and Michelle couldn't look more alike - or act more differently. Mia's always been the glamorous one, the one everyone wants to get close to. And now she's a model, on the edge of fame. But Mia can't resist the illegal thrills that come with fame. When disaster strikes, her mousy look-alike sister has to pretend to be Mia. Michelle saves her career, and turns out to have star quality too. She's even got someone to fall in love with her - a man Mia wants almost as much as she wants to be a supermodel. 5.0 out of 5 stars You Won't Want to Put This One Down!, November 6, 2009

This review is from: Two-Faced (Paperback)
Two-Faced is a sensational novel full of very interesting characters (not the most realistic mind you, but who cares). Set in Manchester's social slums the story follows a number of minor storyline threads revolving around two beautiful twin girls of Kim, a dim-witted mother who got knocked up as a teen and who has now taken to living off government handouts, smoking and drinking those payments away and wasting the rest on bingo. Her two daughters Mia and Michelle have been forced to live virtually on top of one another their own lives, sharing the same miniscule room in their housing commission estate flat. They have pretty much gone without and Mia has resented Michelle as she sees expenses of clothing and feeding her as a burden on money that obviously would be spent on her otherwise. Both girls are determined to not follow in their mother's footsteps, Michelle wants to study hard and become a social worker but Mia thinks a great life will be handed to her on a platter as she believes she has striking looks that will at the very least get her a rich husband, but more likely fame and fortune.

Even though Michelle looks exactly the same, both girls think she looks like a dog and any man would have to be brain damaged to like her. So it is somewhat surprising to both when a very attractive guy takes a liking to Michelle. Of course Mia can't have this and plans to trick him into sleeping with and dating her as obviously once he's had her he won't be interested in her boring sister. Mia also has forced her mother to go into debt to lone sharks and take Michelle's savings (something her mother has no problem with as Mia is her favourite) to pay for a photo shoot to make her a model. Only problem is the real world isn't instantly recognising how great she is and she seems to be throwing up quite a lot which is a major problem at the make or break auditions. Throw in the underbelly crime world of Manchester which Mia also thinks she can use for her own fun when ever she wants and walk away as they will be grateful for the time she gave them and you've got a hell of a read.

Two-Faced is a great story, it does have a little bit of the Hollywood style hot girl who doesn't know she's hot then gets a haircut and suddenly a transformation occurs factor. The two sister's extreme niceness and naivety (Michelle) and sibling hatred and upthemselvesness (Mia), as well as the mother only caring about one child is a bit unrealistic, but it does need to be so for the novel to work.
