1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
I'm a huge Big Lebowski fan and have purchased several other books and items. I didn't hesitate to buy this book but I wish I had. I gave it one read and it was painful. Looking back, it's a pretty lame premise to adopt this style to The Big Lebowski. I enjoy all forms of humor but this one never got going for me. I'd recommend leaving this book on the shelf. I put mine...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Knave abides., November 3, 2010

I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard at a book. I think it has replaced Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal as the funniest thing I've ever read. The prose is fantastic, and the illustrations & accompanying definitions of terms really make it shine. An absolute must-read for any fan of the Dude!

I was lucky enough to read this when it was still an internet sensation. The author has taken the natural synergy (a word I hate using but appropriate in this case) between the works of the Cohen brothers and that of Shakespeare, and made the whole even greater than the sum of the parts.

This is not, as one might expect, a rewrite of "The Big Lebowski" with a lot of silly "prithees" and "thys." The man re-wrote the movie in Shakespearean English, in iambic freakin pentameter. And not only did he do that, but he made some incredibly smart plays on words in the translation. I think this will be studied for years to come. I think it is the Ulysses of its time.

That's right; I said it. Bertocci is the Joyce of our times. And thankfully he is unmarried. Ugh. You know what I mean.

So funny and so smart. Where to begin? If you love Shakespeare, if you love the movie, if your high school English teachers had you read Shakespeare in little books with footnotes and pictures on the left page....then this, my friend, is for you. One of the best send ups ever written. The movie script, action and feel faithfully yet creatively done in flawless Elizabethian English. The Bard would have been proud. He would have staged this and made a mint. A feast for wise asses.

4.0 out of 5 stars O contemptible shrew!, January 30, 2011
As a huge fan of The Big Lebowski I enjoyed every page of this "play". Unlike other TBL books out there this does not merely quote line after line from the film, this recreates the story in a Shakespearean setting and a great job it does. My favorite aspect is the writer's ability to substitute the shear amounts of swearing for equally hilarious lines, or keeps lines that now take on new meaning.

It's a short read and although I wouldn't recommend it to non-Lebowski fans, you certainly don't need to be a thesp to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical!!!!, November 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a faithful retelling of "The Big Lebowski" in Elizabethan English.

And that's it, really. But for some reason, I laugh out loud every time I read it. For example, The Knave, in his bath: "O excellent marmot!" (It helps if you've seen the movie.)

Anyway, a fun little volume. Helped by having seen the play at Dad's Garage Theater.

Recommended,
