4.0 out of 5 stars Two Girls And A Sailor
This jewel is one of my favorite musicals. Here's why. First, the viewer watches the two female leads grow up on screen, physically and musically; second, it is bouncy and perky, with good dialogue and memorable musical numbers; third, there is an element of suspense as the female leads and the audience guess who provided the canteen; fourth, Allyson and DeHaven blend...

2.0 out of 5 stars terrible print
I don't understand releasing a bad print of this film, and a bad soundtrack, when other elements must have been available. The laser disc of this film is far superior to this DVD release, which was a disappointment. When a decent print isn't available, and people really want the movie regardless, I can understand. But this can't be the best there is to offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two Girls And A Sailor, June 10, 2000

This jewel is one of my favorite musicals. Here's why. First, the viewer watches the two female leads grow up on screen, physically and musically; second, it is bouncy and perky, with good dialogue and memorable musical numbers; third, there is an element of suspense as the female leads and the audience guess who provided the canteen; fourth, Allyson and DeHaven blend beautifully, in voice and personality; and fifth, Jimmy Durante provides good comic relief. In the first half of the movie, Gloria DeHaven sings "What Are You Going To Do Now?" on top of a piano, surrounded by serviceman. Her delivery is supurb, and I find myself backing it up many times, just to replay that number. Later on, June Allyson sings "Young Man With a Horn," with band leader great Harry James. Although love triangles are a common plot in musicals of this era, the relationship between the two sisters keeps the plot from being obvious. I never tire of this one. It is top-notch entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only I could have worked at MGM..., October 20, 2003

This is one of my favorites. June and Gloria are a great team, acting and singing together perfectly. Jimmy Durante really shines in this movie, and Van Johnson is cute. Tom Drake is bland but there is so much fun and great music in this movie it doesn't matter. A WWII moral booster that doesn't drag or get soggy, with a
freaky dream sequence AND Virginia O'Brien doing what she does best. I also like the growing up in show business storyline. Gloria
DeHaven has a beautiful voice which should be praised more often.

June Allyson And Gloria DeHaven Are Great As The Two Sisters. Van Johnson And Tom Drake Are Great As Their Love Interests. But Who Will Get Who At The End? You'll See! But On To The Real Part Of This Film.... THE MUSIC~! I Fell In LOve With Gloria's "My Mother Told Me" She sings On Top Of A Piano With A Bunch Of Servicemen. We All Know VAn Johnson Is The Rich Tar (A Sailor) That HAs 60 Million Dollars. Great Film For Every One! I Would Give This One A Couple Billion Stars If I Could Only Do That!!!!

Really love this movie. SHame that Miss Dehaven was not in more pictures. SHe is one very tallented actress who has beauty, style, class and proved that even in the movie "Out to Sea", still has all these things and CAN STILL DANCE with the best of them. SHe really has a wonderful singing voice. Most of all...........even at this stage of her life (80 yr. old) she is just as beautiful and LOOK AT THOSE EYES and THAT SMILE!!!! It is nice to know that Miss Dehaven, Miss Allyson and Mr. Johnson have remianed friend for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Of MGM Greatest, March 2, 2001

This movie is so enjoyable. The plot isn't very complicated or original, but it is easy to follow. There are some funny moments supplied by Durante. Gloria DeHaven and June Allyson also have some funny dialogue. DeHaven's vocals are spectacular. She is a very underated singer. The musical numbers are top notch. MGM has some of the greatest entertainers and they are showcased beautifully in this film. Some of my favorite musical moments are Gloria DeHaven singing "My Mother Told Me There'd Be Moments Like This", June Allyson singing "The Young Man With a Horn", Lena Horne singing, "Paper Doll" and Virginia O'Brien and the Wilde Twins singing "Take It Easy". This movie is charming from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review 2Girls and a Sailor, August 14, 2006
This review is from: Two Girls & A Sailor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I rate this high because it was the only movie we had on Iwo Jima. This of course when there was only mop up operations. We must have watched it 5 or more times. I will never forget that movie because of the circumstances, We were humming the song "Sweet and Lovely" for days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sing Away the War, September 5, 2006
This review is from: Two Girls & A Sailor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Two Girls and a Sailor is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and features a great cast. The Deyo Sisters Patsy and Jean (June Allyson, Gloria De Haven) have been in show business their whole lives. When they grow up, they start their own canteen for soldiers and sailors from WWII to visit, have some snacks, and be entertained. Jean has a secret admirerer who gives her an old warehouse to expand the canteen. In it is an old vaudeville star (Jimmy Durante) whose career is practically over but who comes alive when he can aid in running the canteen. A large amount of soldiers frequent, especially Johnny (Van Johnson) who becomes special to both the girls.

The cast is wonderful. Although Allyson is supposed to be the "ugly" sister type, she's luminously beautiful. De Haven is also gorgeous in more of a pin-up type of way, and her personality is reminicient of the Wilde Twins who are also in the cast. Johnson is appropriately boyish, yet masculine and authoritative, the perfect combination for a screen idol. Durante is wonderful both as a comic and a singer; his unusual voice and great smile lend themselves well to the character.

There is a lot of great music here too. Gracie Allen makes an appearance to perform the concerto for index fingers. Lena Horne sings "Paper Doll." Harry James performs with his orchestra along with another band that features Helen Forrest singing Latin music. Durante sings his famous "Inka Dinka Doo" and Allyson and DeHaven perform several songs. The film is a hybrid; half of it is about the story and half is about the great music. It is escapism at it's finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ageless classic, November 21, 2004
This review is from: Two Girls & A Sailor [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie aired over 20 years before I was born, And I viewed it for the first time 60 years later, but I fell instantly in love with those two sisters. Talk about talent, Beauty, voice, and dancing. This should be a must see for anyone who has left a movie theater wondering what happend to the plot.
