Book Description

A beautiful and sensuous woman, Freddie Walker, has fallen into the hands of a vain and greedy businessman, Jimmy Tate. His notorious reputation and illegal business practices allow him to take and make all the money he can.

But her best friend, Ruby Johnson, a woman of deep faith who has a special relationship with God, arrives just in time. A struggle ensues and Jimmy is killed.

Freddie's children, two of them white, two of them black, are sent to foster homes and separated from one another. Freddie and Ruby are sent to prison. Did Ruby kill Jimmy? 5.0 out of 5 stars Shelly's Review April 4, 2010

Fabulous read by a new author. This book eloquently describes an era that many choose to forget. Out of poverty, abuse, prostitution and heartache, the author was able to show how friendships can be the one thing in life that matters the most.

Highly recommend this book to anyone that can spare a few tears of both heartache and joy!

A great read by new author Deborah Kennedy. The characters are vividly described.
You find yourself caring about them and hoping for their well-being. I found myself many times, wondering if something terrible was going to happen before positive efforts were completed.I do not want to give too much away. Born of "Two Kinds of Color" or not, a must read for everyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Written With Sincerity and Passion June 24, 2012
By Mandy
Format:Paperback
Two Kinds of Color is a multi-faceted story of abuse, pain, despair, and finally, hope. I admit to having a hard time getting into the storyline, at first. It bounces from character to character in a seemingly disjointed way, but after a slow beginning, the story falls together. Focusing mainly on Freddie, a white woman from Florida, and her tumultuous relationship with Jimmy Tate, it also incorporates the fierce friendship with her best friend, Ruby. Together, Freddie and Ruby negotiate life with Freddie's four children among prostitution, gambling, and violence. Of Freddie's children, two are white, and two are black, and in the late 60's and early 70's, this adds a degree of racism that runs deep. When Jimmy beats Freddie, nearly to her death, a shot rings out, and he is killed. Ruby and Freddie spend the next 30+ years in prison, and the children are all separated, but Ruby never forgets them, and long after Freddie is gone, has some secrets of her own to share.

While, at times, the story was explicit and the crimes hard to absorb, Ms. Kennedy writes with so much sincerity and passion, I couldn't help but get caught up in the details of a sad life, and its effects on the following generation. Being reminded of a time filled with such rage and prejudice made me angry, as I am a mother of "two kinds of color" and cannot imagine the hardships being visited on my children that they speak of in this book. A gut-wrenching, painful story that ends up teaching you the true meaning of friendship, in extreme circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Kinds of Color April 21, 2010
Format:Paperback
Two Kinds of Color is an exceptionally beautifully written novel. The characters are compelling and believable and the message of love and sacrifice and true friendship is touching and unforgettable. I savored this book. It is not a book to be skimmed through but read thoughtfully and carefully. The ability of Ms. Kennedy to present her story with such insight and heart-felt emotion is remarkable. I read a great many books and, like most of us, have my favorite authors. I look forward to reading any other novel my newest favorite author writes. Thank-you Ms. Kennedy, I enjoyed Two Kinds of Color very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book April 3, 2010
Format:Paperback
Deborah Kennedy writes with passion. Her characters are real. All Caucasians should read this book. I felt privileged to enter a world I knew nothing about except from bad jokes and prejudice. Sometimes I felt like a Peeping Tom intruding. This book enriched my knowledge and my compassion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo!!!! November 3, 2010

I read "Two Kinds of Color" quite some time ago but the story line stays with me. I live in the Chicago suburbs and this book heightened my senses...I could see, smell, taste, touch and hear the sights and sounds of the neighborhood Deborah Kennedy shared with us. All I can say is Wow and I look forward to the author's next offering!
I shared the eBook with my Mom on her Kindle and she identified with and enjoyed the story also! I suggest it to everyone!

More About the Author

I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Sometimes God gives us a natural gift mine was the gift of words. After spending most of my writing career, fixing the work of other writers, I decided to write the novel Two Kinds of Color.

It's the compelling story of a mother's love and heroic sacrifice for her racially divided children; two of them are black, two of them white, raised in a hustler's brutal environment on the South Side of Chicago. There are great kindle, nook, and paperback reviews. I hope you get a chance to read a sample.
