There is room in my CD collection for both Joannie Madden and Laurence Nugent. Male and female styles on the same instrument present an entertaining contrast. Laurence is also going about his songs in small group, chamber style with accoustic instruments. When I am in an "unplugged" mood, this is an excellent CD to enjoy. My favorites are "Slow Air : Cape Clear" when I am hiking mountain tops with my headphones and "McDermott's/ the Home Ruler" when I have my dumbek handy to play along. Excellent "synchopation" arrangements, excellent guitar (from Ged Foley), dumbek and bodhran (from Jackie Moran) back up. I am eagerly waiting for Laurence's next CD, twin laddies or no.

Music as genuine as the person,

I met Larry this summer and took a week long class tin whistle from him at the Swanannoa Gathering, Asheville, NC. A very talented guy. This CD is in my humble opinion his best. The music is both soulful and uplifting. Larry is also as likeable as his music. The cover photo could have been a better choice. Worth every penny I paid for the CD. Hope to see more out there.

Wild and wonderful whistling - amazing stuff!,

I play the whistle and flute with a group in upstate NY and never have I heard whistle playing like this! Larry's playing is masterful, his variations are brilliant and his energy is overflowing. The arrangements are excellent as well, much better than the cheesy 'new age' stuff on Joannie Madden's CDs. Buy this!

The cover of Laurence Nugent's album drew me to purchase this album, and I am not disappointed at all with the content. Mr Nugent can be very soulful in the way that he plays his songs but at times, his notes are so playful that you can almost see his flute dancing around on the songsheets. My favourite song is "Dans En Dro" - it has a nice beat, but has that lamenting dance undertones. Very sweet, but reflective at the same time. Nugent's album is a Celtic album with a soul.

The worst thing these days to me is when traditional players exhibit amazing technique, but little heart. This man is a shining example of playing music, not notes. Great player, great record!
