5.0 out of 5 stars DVD contains 9 minutes more footage than the VHS version
I compared both VHS and DVD and they trimmed out tons of scenes here and there for a total of 9 minutes cut on the VHS version. why did they trim those before? Some of the cut scenes include Sara and Hogan traveling, and some are scenes like in the saloon, and in the hideout with the rebels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun With Clint and Shirley
An overlong yet engaging Western comedy that pairs Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine to good effect. Based on a story by Budd Boetticher, "Two Mules for Sister Sara" (1970) benefits from Don Siegel's no-nonsense direction, Gabriel Figueroa's effective widescreen cinematography and a memorable Ennio Morricone score. Refreshingly lighthearted by Eastwood standards.

Also the DVD picture shows much more from side to side and a lot more on the top and bottom compared to the VHS version fans of the movie have had to live with for years. The quality of the picture is fantastic. This is probably the best improvement over VHS I have seen.
They also changed the cover from the old VHS version! It still looks great on the DVD, but the old VHS version showed the Mexicans and French fighting! why did they remove that? This is an action type western movie. If you see the cover it almost looks like it might be a romance movie. They should not have changed the cover.
There are a few times when Hogan shoves Sister Sara over a wall or into a tree by placing his hand on her rear, and she emits a female 'oooh!' They removed all those sounds and replaced them with grunting. I guess they thought that was objectionable, but it's amusing the way it was and they should have left it alone. The menu also has this annoying music playing also. Why did they pick that music? They should have used some of the music from the movie. However, a great film and an excellent transfer to DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars We make a good team, November 14, 2004
This review is from: Two Mules For Sister Sara (DVD)
In an inspired bit of casting, sexy and effervescent Shirley MacLaine is cast against tough and laconic Clint Eastwood. The result is a frothy little frontier romance that is two-thirds wonderful. The last third, when TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA returns to its action roots and involves us in a long rebels versus the establishment battle scene, is more an intrusion than a culmination. I would have liked twenty more minutes of Eastwood-MacLaine and hang the rotten French colonial garrison.
This is a funny and straight-forward love story that bears comparison to the best teamings in action history; TWO MULES doesn't embarrass itself when set against any of the John Wayne-Maureen O'Hara films, which is about as high praise as I'm capable of.
My favorite element - throughout the movie MacLaine rides the smallest mount I've ever seen. The burro she's saddled to is shorter than many domestic dogs, although both rider and mount maintain as much dignity as the circumstance allows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!, December 10, 2007
This review is from: Two Mules For Sister Sara (DVD)
Hogan (Clint Eastwood) an ex Civil War soldier is a drifter looking for not so easy but definitely shifty ways of making money. He runs into 3 men molesting a naked woman (Shirley MacLaine) in the desert. Defending the woman, he kills the men and discovers the woman he saved is a nun. Together they embark on a mission to help the Mexican rebel army blast a French fort on the 4th of July. Eastwood is in it for the money; Maclaine for humanistic reasons. The guns are blazing, the French are all over the place, and Eastwood and Maclaine are falling in love. There is only one problem: MacLaine is a nun... or isn't she?

Outstanding western with great action, witty repartee, wonderful characters, surprises and what not. If you haven't seen this classic by now, boy have you been missing...

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic Eastwood Western., February 25, 2000

I first saw this movie while I lived in Arizona in the late 1960's when I was a boy and the only thing I remembered then was the unforgetable soundtrack. Then a couple of years ago, I rented it and I enjoyed every bit of this movie. Clint Eastwood gives a humorous top notch performance as the drifting western mercenary who finally realizes he has a "heart", and Shirley MacLaine delivers excellently as a Nun who is not only running from the French Army but has a BIG secret. From the landscape of Northern Mexico/Arizona to the great acting and music, this is a movie to watch anytime and appreciate those westerns that only "The Man with No Name" can deliver! Two big thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kudos for Two Mules for Sister Sara, December 21, 2009
This review is from: Two Mules For Sister Sara (DVD)
People are often far too snotty about their reviews. A movie is supposed to entertain. This movie entertains. I think there is great chemistry between Eastwood and MacLaine. There is not a dull moment in this film. For anyone that loves a great Western movie, this is it!! If you love Clint Eastwood, this is it!! If you love Shirley Maclaine, this is it!! Plus, the score is so reminiscent of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. How could you go wrong?

This is a great western. Lots of action and comedy too. One of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. Shirley MacLaine is perfect as "Sister Sara". Highly recommended.

While I'm not a huge Clint Eastwood fan this is one of the two movies he is in I thoroughly enjoy (the other is Paint Your Wagon). This one also has Shirley MacLaine who I love and the fact that this is a comedy/drama makes it all that much better. You can't help but laugh and enjoy it.

This is a oldie goldie. Clint Eastwood as his usual cowboy self. Shirley MacLaine is a real treat as Sister Sara. It makes you laugh and we all need that!

3.0 out of 5 stars The film echoes "The African Queen," but..., November 8, 2006
This review is from: Two Mules For Sister Sara (DVD)
With the intervention of Napoleon III of France, Archduque Maximilian was installed as emperor in Mexico but Mexican countrymen known as Juaristas (Juarez' resistance) were fighting to demonstrate that their country could act independently, that - as the reform contended - all men were equal under law, and that foreign monarchical adventures in Mexico were futile...

Sister Sara (Shirley MacLaine), presumably a nun, has adopted their cause and is being pursued by the French army for raising money to the Juaristas... Hogan (Clint Eastwood) is a wonder obliged to neither party... He appears unexpectedly when Sister Sara is about to be raped by three men... Fortunately for her, he kills them all...

But unlike the 'Man With No Name,' Eastwood doesn't turn and ride away... He escorts the good-looking nun in her mission...

But the nun's strange behavior intrigues his curiosity... She smokes cigars, she drinks whiskey and her language comes to be every day more profane...

Hogan's fascination with her arrives at its peak when she removes an Indian arrow from his shoulder, having rendering him half insensible by intoxicating him with shots of Whiskey...

After joining her to blow up a French supply train, he is persuaded to help a group of Juaristas led by Colonel Beltran (Manolo Fabregas) in a final attack on a French garrison...

The climax of "Two Mules for Sister Sara" displays the differences between Leone's conclusion which the 'Stranger' merely disappears into the mists of time... The change of image didn't excite the audience leaving the picture with enough nostalgia for the myth of the loner, the super hero, the 'Man With No Name.'

The film (beautifully shot in Color) is really a two-character story... The interesting team gives amusing and tender performances... The motion picture echoes "The African Queen," but is far away from being Hepburn/Bogart exciting adventure...
