Unbelievable in concert - nuanced, poetic trio interplay, August 2, 2009
This review is from: Two Shade (Audio CD)
I haven't heard the CD, but I just heard Gerald Clayton's trio live at the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Katonah, NY and was compelled to look up his album on Amazon. I've played jazz semi-professionally for a few years and have been a deep listener for 30 yrs, and think Gerald Clayton is off the charts for his unique musicality.
The trio plays a style of jazz that is equally swinging, intriguing, and melodic. Think of it as chamber jazz with a slightly stronger swing pulse. The melodies/harmonies are advanced but are so beautiful that you feel like they should be part of the traditional songbook. Gerald has chops, but is more noted for how selective he is in laying down notes and chord clusters - nothing is wasted. Joe Sanders the bassist and Justin Brown, drummer, are equally musical - I felt I could spend the whole concert listening to any one of them because of how they created their own flow, but together they create an interplay I've rarely heard - maybe Keith Jarrett's Standards trio but slightly more avant here.
