Book Description

From the darkness of a six foot by eight foot cell in solitary confinement to the top of the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, this is the captivating story of one man's struggle to recover from a troubled past.

Charlie is known to his friends as an accomplished mountain climber and entertaining storyteller. Few know the story of his childhood, filled with neglect and abuse. Fewer still realize that he spent seven years of his youth in the shadow of juvenile detention and prison.

After relegating those painful memories to a place far from his current life, Charlie is confronted with his past as he tries to enter Canada for an ice climbing vacation with friends.

"Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" the Canadian Border Services Officer inquired. "No," I responded with a straight face and sweaty palms. "Are you sure you've never been convicted of a felony?" he repeated. "Not since 1955," I admitted, guiltily. So began my journey back in time to a place I thought I had forever left behind.

Charlie faces his past once again, finding strength in his unconquerable spirit, unique sense of humor, and the focus he's found through his passion for mountaineering. He takes you from the tenements and alleys of pre-World War II Chicago through jails, reformatories, and the hell that was prison. From solitary confinement to the jungles of the Amazon, the heights of the Himalayas, the isolation of the desert Southwest, and many points in between.

His story will move you, entertain you, frustrate you, and ultimately inspire you to turn the dark shadows of life into the triumphant shadows cast by the mountains you climb -- whatever form they may take.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Depths to the Heights - a long, hard climb October 23, 2010
Format:Paperback
Because I am a mountaineer, I have read other of Charlie Winger's books, so I knew his work would be well written, accurate and often funny. Nice reads. I wasn't prepared for "Two Shadows", but it was a Winger book so I bought it. Wow! I am also a psychologist and part of my work is with juveniles, detained at our facility while on their way to prison. As I read, I thought a lot about a youngster I worked with for a year and a half. He was incarcerated when he was 14--"doing stupid stuff"--and has now, at 18, left the Juvenile Detention Center to complete his sentence elsewhere. During the time I worked with him, he completed most of highschool, then finished soon after. He is now taking college courses.I have bought another copy of "Two Shadows" which I will send to him as soon as I get clearance from the Warden. It is exciting to read a true story like this, to know it is possible to climb from depths to heights! I hope in passing "Two Shadows" along I might be able to inspire a young man I came to know quite well. Thank you to the author, thank you for publishing this fine book!

5.0 out of 5 stars finished it quick October 4, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Charlie is not a professional writer; do not expect long sentences with flowing dialog and fancy adjectives. Charlie is however an entertaining writer shooting out a barrage of interesting stories and quips he has gleaned over a lifetime of 72 years. There isn't a dull paragraph in the book.

Charlie does not attempt to glorify himself with tales of his mountaineering prowess like so many books we read. I would guess he had a hard time deciding if he wanted to go public with the story of his youth. As he describes in the final pages, many institutions and people never forgive a felony, even if it happened 55 years ago.

The first half of the book will surprise many of you as it did me. His comeback from years in prison is truly a remarkable one, a story I found very compelling. I finished this book in a couple of days because I couldn't put it aside for very long.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Journey December 6, 2010
Format:Paperback
This is an amazing true story of a guy who is dealt a very bad hand as a child in the 1940s and winds up in a federal penitentiary as a teenager. After serving 18 months for stealing a car, he and another ex-con go on a car theft and burglary spree that earns him a 12 year sentence in the slammer in 1955. Time in solitary confinement and a perceptive look at the wasted lives of his fellow cons convince Charlie to turn his life around. He becomes a model prisoner, finishing his high school diploma, taking college courses, and jumping at the chance to learn computer technology, then in its infancy, at the prison's data processing unit. After five years, his sentence is commuted and Charlie walks out to a new life.

Once out of the "joint", Charlie quickly advances in his computer science career while weathering some bad marriages. Along the way, the adventurous spirit that led him to a life of crime as a teenager draws him into a legal but risky avocation - mountaineering. We're not just talking day hikes up Colorado's popular 14,000 foot peaks. By his 40s, Charlie has graduated from weekend peak-bagging to serious climbing, tackling such killers as Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska, Aconcagua in Argentina, Mt. Kenya in Africa, and numerous other peaks on five continents. He successfully summits some of these mountains and is forced to retreat from others, nearly dying during some failed attempts. Finally, by his early 70s, Charlie slows down a bit, contenting himself with challenging but less dangerous peaks in the Western U.S. However, at this point in his life, he is hammered by a bout with cancer and a serious ice-climbing fall, both of which he manages to overcome in relatively short order.

Throughout the book, the vivid details in Charlie's anecdotes will make you squirm in your chair with nervousness, laugh along with Charlie while he laughs at himself, or feel inspired by a very determined guy who turns adversity into triumph. His accounts of the prison environment provide psychological and experiential insights into a life that most of us can count ourselves very lucky to have avoided. And, whether you are a hard-core climber or armchair mountaineer, you will enjoy Charlie's descriptions of his alpine triumphs and tribulations.

This book should be required reading for every juvenile delinquent. For the rest of us, it's an uplifting ride through the life of an exceptional man who appears to have thoroughly enjoyed life and has some powerful lessons to teach.
